Price is no longer an issue. You can get into a eMac for $799. The OS is the same as the 17in laptop so a large part of the mac experience is carried over from the laptop (though the laptop is way cooler). Also, the lower end Apple laptops provide great performance at a fraction of the cost (some as low as $1099).
Boys and girls it is sometimes you get what you pay for. Have any of you heard of any of Steve's products routinely requiring you back up to do a clean install as the Microsoft operating systems do. For personal use and lower cost most will put up with this. But many do not do backups to lose it all. My concern is Linux systems offer the reliability that Mac's do for lesser cost the microfoft. Linux systems friendly to microsoft users are now being released. Apple remains to have an minor advantage to think they will survive, but low production is high cost to the end user. Apple has the rights to the CPU, Even a dual CPU Intel or AMD that is faster is outperformed by a high end Mac.Time is money in business. The Mac stands out then to be a low cost workstation.
I think it's interesting that so many reviews of Macs by current Windows users talk about how great the user experience is, how much BETTER it is than Windows, but then say they won't buy one because it is too expensive.

How much is quality of experience worth? If you buy an actual name-brand Windows box of a similar quality to a Mac you are going to save a couple hundred dollars at most (if, frankly, anything). That's just a few hours of work over the life of the machine.

How much time do you save by not having to fiddle with drivers and settings just to download a set of images from your digital camera? I have a piece of software on my Windows machine that requires that I manually install two .dlls to get to operate, and then remove when I'm done or else all the other software won't work. And that's not taking into account the amount of time it took for me to track down that problem.

How much is a computer worth that focuses on the user experience as a user experience and not a marketing opportunity?

How much is a computer worth that encourages you to install as much software as you want? With Windows (2000 Pro), I always cringe when I have to install something new because about as often as not, something breaks when I install something new. My attitude toward shareware and applications is entirely different on the Mac than on Windows. The Mac encourages and rewards experimentation. The Windows machine often meets out harsh penalties when I try something new.

A number of independent studies have shown that Mac users are more productive, get more use out of their machines and actually enjoy the experience. How much is that worth? I mean, life is too short. Give yourself some credit.

It, frankly, is short-sighted to cross the Mac off the list because the initial price is seen as too high. It is very likely that over the life of the computer you will make up that price difference and then some (literally, if used for business, but in quality-of-experience if just used at home).
