I've been losing ntoskrnl.exe on my xp system regularly for a while now. I always just booted off the xp cd and got repaired from there. Yesterday, I lost ntfs.sys. I tried booting from cd, and it said it couldn't find 7mb worth of external space to load setup. That was bs, so I unplugged it and left it alone for a while. Today, I tried to boot from cd, and it gave me the GPF. When I tried again, it said it couldn't find the cd-rom, and proceeded to boot normally.
This inconsistency scratches my idea that it may be my old hard drive losing files--I've never lost anything but the two mentioned above, and it didn't really even lose the second one, but the system thought it did. I'm thinking now that it may be a problem with my bios, or maybe the reader heads on my hd. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Your install CD is dirty or scratched. I had the exact error and this is the solution. Find another CD or repair the one you currently have.

I had this problem on an HP NC8000 notebook where I replaced the system board. I ran the FIXBOOT function from the Windows recovery console and issue resolved.

1 Boot from the Windows CD, press a key to boot from the CD went prompted.
Note: you may need to enter setup and change the BOOT order if the system does go to the CD drive.
2 Let the Windows files load.
3 Press 'R' to enter recovery console.
4 Enter '1 or the number for the correct Windows installation to repair.
5 You might be prompted for an administrator password. This would be the Windows administrator password. Enter it.
6 At "C:\Windows" prompt enter "fixboot c:" and hit the "Enter Key". You will receive a message asking if you want to rewrite the boot sector. Type 'Y' and hit enter.
7 When the system has rewritten the new bootsector it will return to the "C:/Windows" prompt, type "exit", remove your Windows CD from the CD drive and hit the "Enter" key and your system should now boot to Windows.

If this doesn't work I would run a hard drive test program to verify the HD is not defective.

I hope this helps.
SYMPTOMS
When you try to start your computer, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following error message:
TRAP 00000006 exception TR=0028 cr0=0000000011, cr2=00000000, cr3=000000000 GDT limit=03ff base=00017000 idt limit=07ff base=00017400 CS:eip=0008:08000000 ss:esp=0010:00061fec errcode=0000 flags=000100012 nocy nozr intdis down trapdis eax=0000110c ebx0003001d5 ecx=00001660 cdx=534d0030 ds-0010 es=0010 edi=00350000 exi=00051db6 ebp=00061ff0 cr0=00000011 fs=0030 gs=0000
CAUSE
This issue may be caused by a damaged NTLDR file.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, replace the NTLDR file by using the Windows Recovery Console: 1. Restart your computer by using either the Windows 2000 CD-ROM or Windows Setup floppy disks.
2. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to repair the Windows 2000 installation.
3. Press C to repair the Windows 2000 installation by using the Recovery Console.
4. Type the number of the Windows installation that you want to repair, and then press ENTER.
5. Type the administrator password, and then press ENTER.

NOTE: The Recovery Console uses the administrator password that you provided when you installed Windows 2000. Changes that you made to the administrator password after you installed Windows do not apply to the Recovery Console.
6. Type chkdsk /r, and then press ENTER.
7. Type cd .., and then press ENTER.
8. Type ren ntldr ntldr.old, and then press ENTER.
9. Type copy CD-ROMDrive:\i386\ntldr HardDisk:\ntldr, and then press ENTER, where CD-ROMDrive is the CD-ROM drive letter, and HardDisk is the drive letter of your hard disk.
10. Type exit, and then press ENTER to restart your computer.

Ok heres the thing. I have the same problem with this trap 0000000D general protection fault. The thing is that t is easy to fix it. Just insert the windows xp cd and repair your windows installed on your hard drive. it is a simple fault caused by a virus, or a software, or a hardware installation or some application that has crushed parts of the system registry. But i have a different problem. When i try to repair the partition with installed windows on it, it starts and than my pc shuts down. I do not know if its the processor overheating, or the metherboard is gone to hell, or maybe my ram memory is damaged. I would appreciate an answer. Grats....

Hi - I just had the same error message.
The whole thing occured when an HD broke down and I had to reinstall on a new one.

Now, my problem was that I jumped my cd-drive on the same controller as master and my hard drive as cable select - On the master plug on the IDE cable.

So I just re-checked the jumpers on my HD, and problem solved
I'm going nutso trying to figure out a boot problem on my notebook (new disk drive, old one croaked), and got this error for awhile after booting from CD. Same to the byte as described above -- eiree! Boot from USB floppy also suddenly started failing, different symptom (didn't capture it and I'm not going back <8O )

I figured out that my PDA was still plugged into its docking station, which was still plugged into the notebook. The error cleared as soon as I undocked the PDA. I read somewhere else that having a USB key storage device plugged in can cause bizzare boot behaviors as well.

Moral of the story -- unplug anything you don't actually need for this part of the operation, especially USB stuff...

Now, I'm past this little gem, so I'm back to trying to figure out WTF is wrong with my boot files...

Ok i just got this error also:

specs
3.2 ghz processor
1 gig ram
2 sata HD

I put the windows xp disc in and it gets to BOOT FROM CD: then it gives me the error. I've tried disconnecting one HD and using the other and vice versa and still nothing. I've changed out my CD drives and still the same error.
