I have the same problem, about six years later, still...

Config is a Gigabyte P35 DS4, running Windows 7 (Vista before that) and an external USB case with a jmicron chipset/Seagate 750 GB Barracuda7200.10 drive.

Anyone got an idea by now except buying an extra USB card in addition to the eight ports I already have?
I GOT IT TO WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, I got a VIA chipset usb2 pci card here http://store.4linkcomm.com/viausb20pcic.html and the external enclosure(ALI chipset) http://www.dealsonic.com/bymeidetousb.html . As I said before the NF2 mobo would hang after 5 mins of data transfer, hope this helps the rest of you with the same problems. I can't say the same thing for other external enclosure chipsets that were mention by other posters, guess you have to give it a shot

I have the same problem with my epox(nf2) mobo, but the external case i bought has a ALI chipset, but the problem is the same it works for 5 mins and stops. I dono if its the Nforce2 or the ALI chipset but if the same problem happens to a mobo with a VIA chipset then i guess it could be the external enclosures chipset.

I have the same problem with a WD 80 GB USB hard disk. It worked fine with 2 Win XP computers at home and Win2K computer at work and many others. Now I have problem with 1 Win XP computer at home. Win XP detects the drive, I can show a directory but I get errors when trying to access/copy files or run programs. When I try to stop the device Win XP says device is still busy. If I then try to unplug and plug USB back in the device isn't detected correctly and things get worse. Immediately after I plug it in I can sometimes copy files. I've swapped USB cables and plugged it directly into motherboard port with no luck. Only thing I have done recently is install DVD/RW drive and associated software for DVD burning. All other USB devices work fine (scanner, camera, flash memory readers, mice, etc.) I reinstalled VIA 4in1 drivers with no improvement. I look forward to hearing about anyone else's success dealing with this issue.
I looked at the chips on the external device. And I found I had a Hong Kong made

CY7c68300-56PVC Controller chip.

This is imported by http://www.cypress.com

I downloaded their driver for it.

I will see if this solves the problem. The chip has 2Mbyte buffer.

Same here.

An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\D during a paging operation.

This is after what seems like a internal power failure. "Click occurs".

I think that a USB Reset is being sent to the Mass storage device in response to the Paging operation.

It only seems to happen to the first USB Mass storage device recognized. i.e. I have plugged drives in different orders and the problem happens to the first one only.

Microsoft doesn't really have a direct explaination. But it says to try disabling Enable Write Caching in the Devices Policy

I am yet to see whether this works.

The more I see this happen the more I am convinced that the USB device times out on a write and the layers above it time out on its timeout, causing a USB reset and cascading reset timing problem.

i.e. the USB device handler is not 100% compatible with Disk mechanisms in the higher layers.
have the same problem with my Gigabyte GA-7N PRO motherboard. I am currently exchanging e-mails with Gigabyte who are currently trying to convince me I have an underpowerd PSU. (I dont think so!!)

I have found a work around by using a PCI USB 2.0 card with a NEC chipset. (I have read some other chipsets might not work)

Same Issue as Above

I have a K7N8X board, which by the way is an NForce2 board. In this case though it is a Sony Cyber Shot camera and I am trying to use the USB to pull pictures off of it, essentially use it as a remote storage device, no difference really. And I went looking through my system events and saw that RSM failed, windows claims this could have been a corrupt RSM database problem, but I went through this fix and nothing happened.

Here is the kicker, and your going to love this, I have 6 of these machines, all identical, same case, power supply, motherboard, video card, even model of hard drive, and I did one build and then hard drive imaged the next 5 drives. And the camera will work with 2 out of 6 of them. I try every USB port on the board, front, and all 4 back ports, and same results. Could this be an NVIDIA, XP, SP1, very touchy problem, with removable media storage?

I've got the exact same problem with a lanparty nfII (nforce 2 ultra). Basically I'm currently archiving all my music (in to Flac) on two external 160GB disks and to make sure that my music won't change over time I'm creating md5 checksums. WHen connecting the disks to the internal USB ports, the checksums won't add up. Sometimes they do but most of the time at least half of the checksums are wrong. I borrowed a PCI dlink USB card from work and plugged in the very same drive (on the same machine) and that's working fine.

Oh.. I also have a 40GB drive and that works fine on the internal USB so this seems to be somewhat related to disk size as well.

i am also having the same problem, i have a 4.3gb laptop harddrive in a usb 2 case, its not just a usb 2 problem though, my digital camera is usb 1.1 i think. i connect it, when taking files off its USUALLY ok, but when putting files on it pretty much ALWAYS disappears from the tray icon and says that the device is not accessible.

im also using Windows XP SP1.

its screwed my harddrive now, i have to keep formatting it cos when i download now files to it, they become corrupt.

im using Nforce 2 ABIT NF7-S 2.0 Motherboard with usb 2, firewire, and all other new technologies.

Hi. I'm Italian. Sorry for my english.
I have the same problem with a Vipower external enclosure ( my configuration : ASUS A7N8X nForce2, WInXP Pro SP1).
In this italian forum (http://forum.hwupgrade.it/showthread.php?threadid=494777) we have talked about this problem and we recognized it as a conflict between nForce2 USB 2.0 controller and chip GL811(probably included in all ours enclosure type). Other sites have reached the same conclusion:
http://www.viperlair.com/reviews/case_cool/enermax/misc/ener_enc/p2.shtml
http://www.ldlc.fr/critiques/PB00017950_1.html
http://linux.derkeiler.com/Newsgroups/comp.os.linux.hardware/2003-07/

What do you think about it?

nVidia doasn't seems to be interested to resolve this problem. Only Leadtek give a bios revision that seems to do it : http://www.station-drivers.com/page/leadtek.htm

In Italy we think that we must force nVidia to do something. We wrote to IT & Hardware magazines to make known this problem.
We hope that other people in other countries will do the same!

Thank you all!
