Atleast you guys can get into windows to check drivers and things.
I have been working on this same problem for a year now.
I have changed and swapped everything from the motherboard, harddrive, ram, video card, removed all other cards, cdrom, but I still get the IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL when trying to install windows from the set of recovery discs, from a fresh copy of windows xp. I can't even install windows 98 without getting this same error, just after it loads some drivers, but just before it finalizes the installation. The problem with this is that you cannot tell it to not install particular drivers, it is a part of the windows installation. So far, geek squad, staples tech support, forums, online help, myself working and swapping for a year....no solution.
This error can be caused by a number of issues. Sometimes it really is a driver, but a lot of the times its your computers way of handling uncommon errors.

In most cases with newly installed hardware, the drivers arent completely compatible with your system, obviously. Try downloading a newer and\or older version of the driver. Video cards, RAID controllers, and PCI communications drivers are common areas to look.

I've also seen this problem occur (with my computer previosuly) with overheating. Try keeping a closer watch on how hot your PC gets, and see if there is a correlation between the temperatures and when you see the error. Not sure of any links, but I know there are several programs out there that log system temperatures. This error is very, very common with Prescott processors, as they tend to run a little hotter, and are more prone to crashing due to system temperatures.

In some cases, I've even seen the problem with video cards overheating, especially if your problem lies with playing games with high end graphics. Try a PCI slot cooling fan, or purchase a new fan for the video card itself.

I have WinXP/SP2. Had the same problem. The message contained "Stop 0x000000D1" and on bottom it said "Ndis.sys" by the address and one time it happened instead of "Ndis.sys" it said "Rtl_____" with #'s in the blancs. Well i went to this website http://www.vladd44.com/other/irq_error.php and instead of this,>>>1. Right click on the device in the list (see above) and then select properties. 2. Click the Resources tab. 3. Remove the tick from the Use automatic settings option. 4. Select a non-conflicting configuration from the pull down box. 5. Click OK"<<< I Right clicked on my Ethernet card and uninstalled drivers, restarted my system 2X and the default driver reinstalled itself on the second restart. Lemme know if this fix works for others as well.

Hi.. i personally see this as a hardware over heat problem... the UK is in the middle of a massive heat wave at the moment and the amount of people i know with faulty pc's if growing by the day... now if your power supply fan go's then your keft with a machine that'll slowly heat up and fail...mobo heats up and maybe then your ram and proc start to churn out errors to screen while in windows or running anything...could cause perm damage also... check your psu to make sure it's not getting too hot and swap some ram around, clear out your minidump contents in your windows/minidump dir and try and try again...

Having read all the above, I can only conclude the error message given is not much more than "there is a seriour hardware error". The solutions given and the corresponding problems are so divers, there is -like was said before- not just one solution.
I had the problem too, but it also gave me "http.sys". Using Google, I found the answer somewhere else on this forum: http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/38623/?o=740
The A8N-SLI motherboard came with a NVIDIA firewall that I had put to "anti-hacking only". That alone caused the blue screen to come every now and then (once every half an hour or so). I solved it first by setting it back to "medium" and then, being p**sed off by the program in a whole, shut down the entire thing. I must assume it helped, because I ran the computer for a couple of hours now without problems.
I would advise anyone with this problem to search for all the terms that are given in the blue screen, if no solution is given, it might point you in a direction.

I have this same problem after updating video card drivers. i have a ATI radeon 9600 pro, and had been having video card probs, so i decided to update the driver. after updating i get the bsod saying driver_irql_not_less_or_equal, and when i restart it it makes a repeating chiming sound. i have to turn it off and on a few times, and sometimes jiggle the video card to make it turn back on. i cleared the driver and now it doesnt do it, so im guessing i need a different driver...any help would be great

well guy, my problem i believe has to do with overheating, ive uninstalled SP2, ive set the paging file to NO PAGING FILE, ive done everything i think had anything to do with it, like virtual memory and stuff. so my solution in this case is go get a program like speed fan to tell you what the processor's temperature is. if you see it continually getting hotter and hotter and if you can get into the 60 degrees celcius, id say thats a problem with overheating. I can leave my laptop on doing nothing, itll stay at an average temperature, but as soon as i do something like this (typing) or something as simple as playing music, it overheats and then i get the same screen. looking over this forum, theres a whole lot to say about it, but no "for-sure" solution. So what im going to do is send this into repair, get them to open it up, make sure everything is ok, clean it up in there, make it like new. Hopefully by doing that, itll be good. if not, this being a laptop, i cant switch around pci cards and give them new irq's, i dont know what i'll do. so we are still in this forum awaiting a solution...

Like many of you here, I am experiencing the same problems with this DRIVER IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL thing (and its little deviant error spawns that plague my computer) and I am coming to this forum for help. I guess the thing to do is to give a little background information:

Computer:
IBM Thinkpad (i series), Intel Celeron Processor (running at 500MHz) 256M of Ram, 6G HD (partitioned 5G for OS and a few essential programs and 1G for storing data), I have a dialup connection (though I have a LAN card installed as well). An external keyboard, mouse, and monitor compliment the PC (for ease of use…I am a freelance writer and do a lot of typing). I also have an HP inkjet printer. (Note: everything with exception to the monitor is connects via a USB Hub.

Software:
WinXP Home Edition (with SP1) updated with all critical updates except SP2.
MS Office 2003 (Complete with MS One Note) full install minus web features.
Mozilla Firefox (for browsing without the hassle of popups and whatnot).
AVG Antivirus Personal Edition, updated
Ad-aware SE, updated
Miscellaneous programs related to writing.
Hotmail Popper (for downloading all Hotmail accounts using MS Outlook 2003).

Problem:
Monday, December 6, 2004, I used my computer with no problem. I did some research on the internet, downloaded my email, and worked on a few projects. On Tuesday, December 7, 2004, I sat at my computer and within 10 minutes of working, the Blue Screen of Death appeared with the DRIVER IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL error. I booted to Safe Mode and it was okay, so I thought it was an improper installation so I tried reinstalling the OS. (Backed up everything first because I want to do a clean install).

I started WinXP installation and after setup prepared to install Windows, the errors started happening again. I just walked away from the computer and have sat down since. Now I have a PC on which I cannot install WinXP.

Which brings me here looking desperately for a solution because I have have absolutely no idea what is going on with my possessed laptop. Help!
I had this problem too. Everytime, during system boot, blue screen appeared with this error message, and system has been immediately restarted. But no new hardware has been added, no new software installed. I really don't know why Windows has been doing that to me. After reading these posts, I found that three of my PCI cards have the same IRQ number (in table displayed while booting). I changed their possitions for few times, and now each device has unique IRQ number. Problem has gone. Thank you all.
