Hi, I was having alot of on/off problems with my 9800XT and it seems, for now, that the problem was cause because I told spybot to block one of it's processes at startup. I thought I was having spy/adware problems and blocked everything i didn't recognize or thought suspicious. The thing was the av2exx or something similar. I forgotten. I also updated my drivers to 8.411.0.0 so I'll get back on here in a week or so if all is still good. Ta.

Thanks for all responses to my questions and comments on page 21 and 22.
My 9800 XT card works perfectly now.

I have now moved up in spec and made myself this £1100 Monster (On the outskirts of what I could afford but I did it over 8 months thats why the cards are out of date with rest of the system, I got those first, last year). But it's still awesome! I had a few teething problems at first but I've now got over them. Any questions or comments welcome. Here's my new spec:

Pure Crossfire Advantage PC-A9RD580Adv
AMD Athlon64 X2 Dual Core 4200+
Corsair 2Gb TwinX XMS 3200
ATI Radeon X850 Crossfire Edition (Master)
ATI PowerColor X850 XT Crossfire Slave
Incased in a ASUS VENTO 3600 (awesome gaming tower keeps system and CPU temp down to 23~25°

I don't know if this post should go into another forum or not the first bit is relevant to this thread, I'm sure someone will tell me if it's wrong.

I replaced my asus 9800xt with a ati a x850xtpe vpu and the games the 9800xt had trouble with are still a little unstable with the new card. I just think some of these games (like value games) tend to be a little unstable. also the older games were built around an older version of directx, than a lot of us are using. All I know for sure is the 9800xt played some video intensive games very well and some not so well, and the same is true of the 850xtpe.

I had just built a new pc a few weeks ago running a dual core 3.2gig intel processor, 512 meg video card (ati radeon x-something 1900-something), 2 gigs ocz ram pc-5400, asus p5w dh deluxe mb, heavy duty power supply (enermax 660 watt), xp pro... yada yada.... and was pullin my hair out tryin to figure out why the h-e-doublehockeysticks the bloody computer kept getting random freezes, most of the time getting the repeated skipping cd sound where you couldnt ctrl-alt-del or move the mouse... basically, power down and reboot. I went thru the registry, allowed permissions on everything... still had the problem. Updated all the drivers, removed pinnacle studio 9... still having problem. I was running at about 39 degrees celsius on the cpu temp, 38 degrees on the case/mb temp, but noticed that the ati card was runnin at 50 degrees... I had ordered a zalman gpu heatpipe/fan combo that I didnt install yet (wanted to ensure that the card was good before upgrading that fan). I installed the new heatpipe on the gpu and dropped down to 41 degrees. I was still having the problem... so I removed a dimm of ram and noticed that it said pc-5400, but when I had configured the bios, I had it set to pc-6400. So after calling up microsoft, reactivating windows (removing the stick of ram appeared to be a major hardware change which made me reactivate), I set the bios to the right ram speed, and wham! no more problems... I was capturing video from tv, I opened visio, photoshop, indesign, illustrator, imageready, outlook, word, excel, proshow gold, studio 9, musicmatch, windows media player, ulead dvd movie factory, nero... all at once... no freeze up. If I tried to just capture video and open one program, the computer would freeze. I know that the front side bus speed and the numbers corresponding to the ram speeds can be easily confused... I hope this helps someone from calling "geeks on call".
Ok i have managed to lower the card temp to 45 on desktop and 52 after a while of the spinning cube in atitool.
It still crashes just the same. I am convinced it is a compatability issue maybe with certain drivers.
i read before in these posts that a good power supply is needed i have an omni 400w power suply. Can anyone varify if changing the power supply actually works.

I was having the exact same problems as all of you are having I have a Radeon 9800 pro I thought the card could of been faulty so I got a Geforce 6600 but the crashes still happened so i thought it could of been over heating.

So all I did was simply move my tower from the confined space it was in, into a place where there was more space and it works perfectly!!!

The hot air could not escape out of the sides or the back as they were faceing the wall causing the computer to crash.

I Have an Samsung SyncMaster 550s i think its pretty old. i have exact same probs with my 9800xt those being. crash to desktop after about 5-20 mins gameplay in directx 9 games. Sometimes it give me a vpu recover message. i think depending on what drivers you have it sometimes give a message saying Critical exeption fault or something that the memory could not be read. my specs: I have always had this problem ever since i got my pice or S*** pc. the vid card has always ran at around 57 -67 sometimes 72 degree on hot day in games. After sending the whole computer back they said they fix it and it seemed like they had, no crashes for atleast 2 months, i dunno what they did. the crashes only seemed to happen now after the card reached 70 degree for a while. I took all the plastic crap and the stock fan off the vid card and put an old amd processor fan on and put 2 case fans superglued togerther facing flat on the back of the card. it now runs at about 53 in games 58-60 on hot days. But i still get the crashes just the same as before. ive tried everything exept more heat sinks for the ram.

My whole computer has been very weird and dodgy ever since i got it. it goes through periods of being stupid. For a month it might crash heaps in games and be a little un responsive in windows sometimes. Other times the motherboard has made a strange beep that sounds like a cd spinning up or something and the whole system freezes for a sec then returns to normal. i has done this so bad before that i thort my mb was f**ked, so i turned the pc off and didn't use it or a while then one day i decided to play a game and it worked fine for 2 or more hours of gameplay no crashes or nothing. then you think well maybe its fixed it self after a few days you discover some other weird problem that starts to occur. Like it wont post for some reason even though it worked fine the day before, no changes in windows nothing! after a while it works. Then u might get the vpu recover thing happening heaps. I just wana put my Case with all in it, maybe take out processor, in a big garbage bag and p**s in it and send it back to computer parts land.

asus a7n8xe deluxe motherboard.
ge cube 9800xt poo card

I do not think it a power issus at all. I have a friend's machine that has experienced the same problems as everyone else. I took this machine hooked it up to my setup at home (meaning I just pluged in some cords where my computer sat. and hooked up to my monitor). The machine ran great for hours figured what ever I did must have worked, I even tried it on a different spot in my house to see if it was running good. (I hooked it up to where another computer was sitting) I gave back to him said it looks fine to me, he set it back up and as soon as he went to play a game it got the black screen. The only difference in setups at the houses are the monitors. Has any one thought to look at the monitors. The monitors at my house are 3 years old+. Maybe these new fangled monitors are the problems. Someone look into this please.

If there is a problem with the 9800XT then send it back to ATI so they can repair it? And I am assuming that they are not going to charge you right?

Anyway, NVIDIA is also responsible for there faulty GeForce 4 Ti 4200 graphics cards. They just crash with black screen when playing games longer then about 1 hr at a time. And many times, the system won't even detect the card. I still have this card on my desk, because it just won't show any display. In another forum, there were many people having similar problems with the GeForce 4 series of cards, but anyway.

Good Luck,

you can also adjust the bus speeds by getting PCI latency tool, setting it to 64 actually works, also leaving the AGP Aperture at 64 is recommended

For Mark D. Go back in this form to Nov 7 05 (larry keatley) . If you are continue to have a problem after reducing AGP to X 4 try turning down the sound accelleration as per this post. It really works if your game is sound looping as It freezes. You can always turn it back up when you are not playing the game that is causing problems.

i was having the exact same problems as you, with the crashing and black screens and turning the agp down to 4x fixed everything for me, its been running perfectly for a couple weeks on intense gaming everyday. i havent noticed any decrease in performance at all and am perfectly content with my card now. I'd turn the agp down before you send it back, itll probably work for you.

I have had a Radeon 9800XT for almost 12 months now and thought I was on my own tilll I read this forum. Almost every 3D game I have crashes after a certain amount I time, black screen PC resets etc.

In the end I contacted ATI, and by their own admission they said the card needs repairing so I must send it back to Canada. Great, slight problem in that I am a UK resident. This is not a software issue, temp issue, not is it a driver issue. Its a fundamental design prob with the card and ATI are very reluctant to admit it.

Will I loose any performance if I drop AGP down to 4x in the bios? Has anyone who has done this on the forum noticed anything?

I might just f**k it off into the trash and go back to NVidia, they were far less trouble!
