Being that society has developed into everything being entirely visual, I'd tend to disagree with you.

When people judge your attractiveness before your personality and buy things based on their eye-catching design I'd say that's all they care about.

I'm sure everyone knows someone who looks at the newspaper and magazine articles' pictures before reading it.

I'd say if you can afford both a nice optical wired amplifier and a high def tv, go for it.

If you can't afford both, go for what you use more.

I mean, if you spend 14hrs a week on the couch watching TV, go with a nice TV.

Regarding the audio/video tradeoff, it really depends on whether you're more of a videophile or an audiophile. I, for one, am more of the latter than the former. Therefore while I splurge on Klipsch speakers, a Creative Zen Xtra 40 GB mp3 player, a Creative Audigy 2 NX card, and Sony MDR-V600 studio quality headphones, I am quite happy with a simple 4:3 CRT as my TV. This is despite the fact that my some of my friends have plasma and HDTV sets. It's just more important for me to have great audio than it is for me to actually see what I'm watching, lol.
