When watching the HD stations, I have noticed that the HD movie broadcasts are often better than what I can see on DVD at home in progressive mode (Toshiba player.) Now, that implies to me that there is more information available than I am seeing. Of course, it may not be on the disk, but certainly one can hope that manufacturers will eventually use the best source they have (e.g. PAL or better) and downconvert for NTSC composite while upconverting for component or DVI output.<br /> <br /> My point being that there is likely a fair amount of life available even in current DVD technology (I'd easily sacrifice the DTS sound for higher resolution for example.)<br /> <br /> But ... the kicker is that I'm not ready to pay for it. Since you can store 60 hours (30 gigs) of video on a single blue-disc, and movies will only use about 3 hours of that at regular resolution, there'll be another 20 gigs for higher quality. It is like using Windows Media Player and having the video size doubled. I always blow up the videos I watch, not dvds. Most videos on the net are usually around 320 x 240 or so, not the tv resolution of 720 x 486 and there is the difference of a monitors resolution. Simply put it may look bigger and with the distance from the screen a person may not notice a large enough degration for it to matter. I don't think a higher price would be worth it. The point still stands that you can't get 2 cups of orange juice out of an orange that only yields 1 cup. However by adding water you can still reach 2 cups and fill your needs sacrificing taste. The question is if the quality is so bad that is doesn't justify the increased artifical size.<br /> <br /> *I want to add that around next year or so new DVD burners will be hitting the public market utilizing the long awatied blue laser technology. When DVD manufactures use the bigger space then maybe HD DVD will be fact and not fiction. Till then we are dealing with a marketing ploy for the rich.
