How useful do you guys think a fingerprint reader is on laptops? My friend boasts his fingerprint reader, and how easy it makes his password admin but i find it completely useless since there's a backword typed password to it. i sorta started an article on it on my blog: http://schizoslim.blogspot.com

I have a 6120N Tiny (Mitac) Laptop.
The guy I bought it off didnt seem to have any problems with it (he had xp first edition installed) but I installed windows xp with sp1 and I am having trouble booting up.

On rare occasions it boots up fine after I swich on. However, most of the time when I switch on, there is a single access of the floppy drive, then after a couple of seconds a 3-4 second access of the floppy drive and then the laptop just doesnt do anything else.

A combination of SHIFT, CTRL, ESC, F1 keys whilst switching on seems to work on occasion, but its very haphazard and I'm coming to the conclusion that its just a matter of switching off then on again a few times (the last time I tried, it took 15 attempts at swiching off/on).

The boot sequence is cdrom/HD but the floppy access still occurs. Ive tried removing the floppy drive as there doesnt seem to be any way to disable it in the bios, but the laptop still dont boot.

Any ideas?

It has a PIII 700Meg processor installed with 128Mb ram.

ADDENDUM
Forgot to mention that as the battery appeared knackered, I have removed it and I am using it on mains power.

True, but if the centrino is in fact a better buy i would be willing to pay the extra 50 bucks for another 256MB DDR chip and/or even upgrade the video card. What i'm really trying to figure out is how much better is the P4-M 1.5GHz centrino than the P4 HT 3.06GHz or is it even better at all?

Well, I don't think a 256MB comp could compete with a 512MB one, especially with the tasks you want to do on it. I really doubt that a company would make a laptop with a proc that would overheat, but if you want to make sure, you could use a temp monitoring program.

LAPTOP DECISION

I am about to get a laptop and Ive narrowed it down to two. The first is a Toshiba Satellite P4 HT - 3.02Ghz 1mb cache, 512 DDR, 60GB, Radeon 9000 128MB, WiFi, with 15.2 WXGA TFT display (<--nice display). The second is a Dell Pentium 4-M 1.5Ghz centrino. 2MB cache, 256 MB DDR, 60 GB, built in video (?), WiFi, 15.2" Display. The first, to me, seems so much more appealing but people have been telling me centrinos rule because of their extra mb of cache. Each laptop costs about the same so price isn't an issue, the only issue I'm concerned about is heat. Will the first one fry? I'm going to be using alot of design programs (AutoCAD, Pro-E, blah blah) and I know the first will run those programs like cake, but will it fry when I keep it on for long hours? Can the centrino even compete with it?

You should have no problem running your laptop from the mains without the battery.
I have done a number of repairs on laptops with supposedly 'dead' batteries. Mostly Compaqs. I have found the same problem on a number of other makes as well. If you take the thing apart, and have a good look at where the mains adaptor/charger plugs in, most, but not all, disengage the battery for charging while the computer runs from the mains adaptor. Have a good look at the solder joints. I have found untold amounts of 'dry' joints here stopping the battery from being charged. Hence the battery goes flat and never recharges. This doesn't happen overnight, but seems to be a gradual process. Hope this helps.

As to having a seperate laptop forum, I'm not sure that's such a good idea. A lot of people I know run a mile when you mention laptops, but if you ask the question in an abstract fashion, they can normally resolve the problem. It may be best just to use the Forums already in existence. Comments, anybody?
I want to connect it without the battery because the battery is completly dead and this is causing me not to be able to even turn on the laptop. Apparently if the battery is completly shot then the laptop will not work at all. that is my problem. I do not want to have to buy a new battery at this time as I am just testing the laptop out right now just to see what it is capable of. If it can not do what I need it to then I was just going to sell it.
