I work for BT BB / Vision / Fusion / Mobile (Kinda multi skilled lol) But yeah just an FYI we use a system called E.co to un-throttle peoples lines during what i assume to be peak times so they can use BT Vision in congested areas where its usually throttled below 2mb at certain times, which causes the vision service to stutter alot.

If someone were to stumble across that think in google and figure out the need for a security certificate and then work out how to use it id imagine it'd be very useful, i believe all ISPs using BTs DSL systems have access to it.

At least thats my understanding of what it does, i might be completely wrong and doing this day after day and not know what its doing lol so yeah thats how i unthrottle DSL.

My broadband is slow during peak hours (close to 100kbps) & it max out at off peak hours (512/128), I also noticed 2mbps bandwidth whenever a download starts, this lasts only few seconds and it goes back to regular speed. I'm using a eircomm wireless ap (512k adsl), Is there a possibility to hack this connection & reach 2mbps ? Any tips appreciated. Tnx
Carter is dillusional. I'm N+ certified and used to be VOL TS, so I know what I'm talking about...

Bandwidth is set via the DSLAM. Sometimes the DSLAM is improperly set, so you should call your ISP to make sure they are reading the speeds you're paying for. You can even have them do a test from DSLAM to premises to test your bandwidth. This can usually assess where you're hitting a snag.

You should also make sure you're on an ATM backbone and not a frame relay one.

Michael, why do you think cable is better than DSL? I have had both, and I can tell you it's not. I'm currently on Speakeasy 6mbit/768kbit through Internap routing. It's so much better than any cable company could ever provide.

I have a 5ms latency on my first 8 hops and high traffic times don't ever exist. Cable has to battle with TV signals and anyone else in the neighborhood that has it, which if you live in a metropolitan area could mean everyone.

Yeah, I agree with War Dave. I called my ISP once (long time ago) and complained that my internet was slow (turned out it was the computers fault), and they went ahead and tested it and called me back saying "nope, here at the central thingy ur getting over 2Mb/s, must b a problem at ur end of the line". And it was... I pay for 2mbit and thats what I get, well actually I average around 2.1.

EDIT: Yeah, the DSLAM, like Sean B said (central thingy)

If its in the terms and conditions, about reps talk rubbish then this will not apply.

If your told something that is untrue, then your entitled to a refund, hell, my ISP did know untill I told them it was running slow, but they did do something about it.... less than 48 hours later all runing full speed.
the fun thing is, I know who they get there bandwidth from, so a quick mail to them makes every one ask how high..
Apparently I was told I had 2.4Mbit DSL, but I actually only have 1.5Mbit. They changed the DSL packages a while ago so I can't really complain about them telling me different than what I am getting. Oh well.
Sorry but uncapping DSL just isnt possible. You get what you pay for because its setup on the DSLAM and nothing you can do will change that, short of breaking into your ISPs and editing your account yourself.

Yep.

How did I figure this out? I was setting up my friend's dad's *slow* network at his office which uses a T10 line, and realized the bandwidth was being over-ridden to the ATM server.
