It's like my UT2K4. I downloaded it as a beta from Atari, and liked it a LOT so I downloaded a leaked version from Applejuice, a German P2P. It was great, and I loved it a LOT, so I went out and bought the game 2 weeks later after demand had died down. My clan uses only official versions of it, we didn't even share CDs.

Us gamers are an impatient lot... some movies come out in the US in the middle of summer but don't get to England till CHRISTMAS! (The original Star Wars movie being a case in point).

On a very loosely related note, I thought that WWII online should have been bought in Europe first, then released in the US a year later... it would have been more historically accurate that way
IT the same with most things, Ive known people to pay 3-4 times more for stuff that available in ROW before europe, Software here is exspensive, infact One example was Quak express, In the UK it was over £1600 but when i went to look in the US, it would have cost £450, but no-one wanted to export it for the standard exchange price.

with the modern age where things takes a day to get arround the world, there is no need to stall availablity dates, most people will try to download the Software if its not available, and I wold think that if things were made available them there would not be so much pirating of software, saying that they need to sort out the pricing as well
"According to Shacknews, Todd Hollenshead (CEO of Id) said that UK release will be only 3 days after US:

"So, the next question is release dates. Retailers in the States will be allowed to pick up games starting
at 12:01 AM on August 3rd. The official street date is actually August 5th in the U.S.A., but some of
your favorite stores will probably have it early for those of you who have to have it first. Check with
your local retailer for that information.

Internationally, the game will take a few more days to make it to the store shelves. The UK will probably get it first, on or about August 6th. Everywhere else will probably be Friday, August 13th " "

Wow, They have to wait a whole 10days. If ur gonna pirate it buy it when it comes out if it is worth it. Doom3 is going to worth It. I know I am buying it.

In the past I had a few games months before release.. (in one place or another.. (C64..) ) I had one game that I really like and for the simple reason that copies go bad I Duplicated it.. It was almost 3 years before I saw the game on a local shelf. A second one that I had was never released in Canada. (atleast to my knowleddge)

As to the pirate and free... With Music, CD's have a percentage going to the music industry. I don't copy tunes.. I'd rather turn on the radio.. Besides.. If I like it enough to want it that much.. better to go and buy it.

I like to wait. I mean why would I want to pay 80$ or more for a new game "just because it came out?" When I can wait 2-3 months and have it for 50$ or 60$ (which I think is plenty.) I have a few games I only recently purchaced that I paid under 30$ for that are sets with the original plus most of the expansions. I think that is pretty good. The may not be the newest release But I can ante up for that when it IS one that I REALLy want NOW. Since I saev some on th rest. Atelast there are the demos, so you can get an idea of what a game is like before paying for it.

Anyone try some of the cad/modling software that's out there? As a hobbiest.. spending 17,000$ US on software that has little bearing on my hobby is useless. (yes.. 17 thousand US dollars.. There are others that cost more. )

Say.. any one up for solitare? (cards.. much cheaper then spending 140$ on an OS and another grand or 2 on a computer to play it... especially at 99 cents.

These games, I think are going to really disappoint. I played through the riginal, nearly out of spite of the game at first(damn that crow bar), but then I sorta got into it, and finally beat it. Then there was this mod, that is like crack that came out:CS..lol, I won't say anymore, other than I can't wait for CS:S beta later this month, that will ultimately decide whether I keep playing CS competitively, I may have to move onto COD

Airman said this... and cracked me up:
personally i dont care for D3 or HL2

It's funny that NO ONE mentioned his comment at all in their replies. He must be like thousands of others, sick of this mystery game-type we're slowly seeing more and more of. So Doom 3 has actually managed to rear its head? Amazing, is it still an issue that it will run like crap on nearly any machine that's not a supercomputer cluster or am I completely out of touch?

And HL2... Half-Life is still one of the most excellent games to date. I can still play through it today and it kicks the absolute crap out of every stupid popular title since. Halo is the biggest joke on the competition list but i won't even start there. And I got sucked in by the shiny Ati offer of free HalfLife2 with your video card. I don't even have any guarantee it'll ever be released at all. They're approaching 1 year behind, and everything they initially showed off is being incorporated into far more dreadful and overrated games. FarCry and MaxPayne2 both incorporate ragdoll which is amusing at best. HalfLife2 looked to actually apply that to the games playability with that fancy gun that throws things round onto people. i spend a whopping $800 (australian) on my 9800xt... would i even have bought it if it didn't have HL2 nicely attached? I don't even know.

I know this isn't any longer a piracy discussion but an important one to me nonetheless. As far as waiting a week for a game goes however... i couldn't care if something takes another month to get here. I'd either order if from where it is available or wait. I'm just not so Bleeding-Edge competitive.

Funny this article should appear in my Email, i was just discussing this exact same topic with a friend. It went like this:

him: "doom3, eh?"
me: "oh, no s**t! are you gunna buy it or download it?"
him: "download, then buy... im not waiting a week longer than the yanks"
me: " you rekon youll still buy it after youve played it?"
him: "sure i will"

Its funny this piracy worrying... friends of mine download every single title, yet we all have game boxes up to the ceiling.... its simply a matter of buying games you actually want, not games that look good in the demo or have a cool picture on the box.

a good example of a game i didnt want is Chrome... looked awesome in the store... ALMOST bought it then and there... went home, downloaded it... played it for 1 mission and uninstalled, deleting the ISO too.

warcraft3 - played beta on pirate servers, downloaded the full version, downloaded the expansion pack too...

...then bought them both

There isnt one title on my computer that i didnt pay for, yet pirated copies of everything float past hard disk sectors destined to read all zeros so frequently youd hardly know they're there.

developers need to get back to their gaming roots and remember how it goes... its alway been like this and if it changes - hell, i might just go outside for a change
