I have to say I agree with the views expressed on Doom 3. I think it has, like so many games before, been hyped to the extreme. The graphics are very nice, but not as bleeding edge as we had been told, and if you dig under the skin its a 'collect key and shoot baddy' game, with nothing more. I for one have been very dissapointed by it.

I love first person shooters, play them to death, and at 37yo have grown up from the late 70's playing games, and don't intend to stop for years to come. Every new generation tends to be delayed and hyped beyond reality, and when it arrives often disapoints.

Doom 3 is one of these, for me, and I hope the same problem will not impact on Half Life 2, when it finally arrives....
Will Olson II : That is what I would expect for nearly any sequal.

In that cast.. I think it may do fine. Still haven't seen it, but all the negative ..remarks/review, seem geared to something that doom never was.. It is the original first person shooter. From 2d maps that gave a look of 3d, to the 3d maps of doom2. Perhaps now it WILL be in 3D. not a faked (quite well faked) as original Doom.

..Been a while since I played either. (Quake included for that matter..)

I'll have to see it AND play it before I can make an argument here. (atelast have something to stand on. )
I think those are some strong words from Sander and quite honestly I can not agree.

Unless Sander's hardware is broken, or something very wrong is at play - he is a very harsh critic.

The Doom 3 engine is truly a work of art which introduces some of the most state of the art 3D processes and effects currently available. I doubt there will be another engine to touch it within 6 - 12 months. On the right hardware, the D3 engine and the D3 content look simply amazing.

It is one of those releases which redefines our thoughts on the game engine and most definately raises the bar an evolutionary click. Kudos to id for having the balls to release a game that pushes current hardware to the limit. Trust me, D3 isn't heavy on hardware because of sloppy programming or inefficiencies in the engine - It's heavy because it's so damn good.

Having now attended two John Carmack lectures, and studying his work in the early 90's, it's clearly apparent that he is one of the most respected 3D engine programmers in the world. When he talks, people listen - and for good reason.

It seems we have the usual case of the layperson who can't see the diamond from the rough. To use an analogy; most people can't see what all the fuss is about a Ferrari vs. BMW - They both do the same thing; One is more expensive than the other, and one is faster or quicker. - But obviously there's more to it.

If it wasn't for the people like that at id software and for games like D3, we wouldn't have much progress in game engines - even if you can't see why.
