My problem was a variation on the one above. For one, there was no previous version to roll back to. Second, even after upgrading to the latest drivers (later than the original posting) it was the same problem. For all those who can't roll back or get around it by fiddling around with the version of the drivers, try disabling as I mentioned above.

I followed the instructions about rolling back the nv_agp.SYS driver and it solved my F@#$%&G problem!
This was such a simple fix but any normal user would have paid me $200 to fix it because they lacked the skills needed to research the blue screen shutdown/restart issue!
When CASH MONEY is involved I will do almost anything to solve the issue!
I love being a techie!!

Power to the Techies!!
I followed the steps in Joe Smoe's excellent post. But it didn't work for me. I got it to work though, and here's what happened.

After downloading the installation packages from nVidia's website for both the on-board GPU and the nVidia graphics card, I installed everything with no luck. Then I read Joe Smoe's post.

In the nVidia folder on my C: I found that there was no nv_agp.sys in either new downloaded versions' folder. I did a search on my C: for nv_agp.sys -- and only found what was already in System32.

Finally, I disabled not only the on-board GPU under display drivers but also the AGP Host to PCI Bridge under System Devices AND after 'Show hidden devices' the AGP Bus Filter under Non-Plug and Play Drivers that Joe Smoe mentioned.

Now, finally, on shutdown the machine is off.

Removed the Nvidia PCI card and put my Nvidia AGP card in and everything works perfect. I can now tell XP to shut down without a reboot and no more NV_agp.sys errors. Thanks for the help.
I had the same problem with Winxp pro, and an asus a7n8x deluxe mobo------ no shut-down. Then I discovered the blue screen by toggling the restart-on-system-error switch, and I saw that nv_agp.exe was the culprit. Finally, after reading these posts, I removed the PCI graphics card, and put in an AGP card and voila, problem solved...by the way it was the same problem with 2000pro. It took me quite awhile to connect all the dots, though.

I want to thank Joe Smoe 4/21/2003 for his suggestion. I have an Asus A7N8X-X motherboard with a PCI MadDog NVidia FX5200 128 meg video card. I did not have any problem shutting down until a couple of weeks ago. By disabling the "automatic restart when Windows has a problem" I also was getting the BSOD telling me that my NV_agp.sys driver was bad. I am using XP PRO SP2 with automatic updates. I downloaded the NVidia platform drivers as Joe Smoe suggested. It put the drivers in a folder and then I renamed my original driver NV_agp.sys to NV_agp.old and copied the new driver to the Windows/system32/drivers folder. It corrected my problem. I do not know what changed in my computer to cause the problem because it had been working fine for over a year. Thanks again Joe.

I had the same issue using an Asus A7N8X motherboard with an older PCI video card (Voodoo3). When windows goes to shut down it reboots instead, or when auto-reboot is shut off it shows the nv_agp.sys stop error. I had success downgrading the motherboard drivers back to the standard Windows XP defaults, but considering I bought the board for the power of the nvidia chipset I was not satisfied. Try the latest Platform/Nforce drivers from http://nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp . They worked for me, shuts down just fine now. Thx to the posters for all the help!
this error occurs upon either restart or shutdown..originally it would restart at shutdown and microsoft.com refered to turning off restart on error..so that i could see the blue screen that was just flashing.
im unsure as to what this error refers to..ive seen similiar ones.. yet not the same.
the ram was bought off of crucial.com and the matched it with my board. a7v333. this is an upgrade from 98. i had an older vid card, but i replaced that with a new card after the upgrade and before i turned off the restart on error
I built an EPOX 8RDA+ based machine for my aunt and had the same problem with shutdown and a bluescreen pointing to nv_agp.sys. I had salvaged an old POS PCI video card for it and solved the issue by disabling the AGP to PCI bridge. I presume that I can just re-enable it once we get that AGP video card like, say, an ATI Radeon 5800 Pro.

Yes, the problem is that the nforce motherboard has problems if you're using an _older_ pci video card with their new nforce drivers. You can solve this by using an agp video card instead, or downgrade your nforce drivers as the previous post mentioned.

(ehm, sorry about those blank posts - couldn't get it to work ; )

I had the same problem with a new system I built - EP-8RDA+ mobo w/ nForce2, 2400 Athlon, Win XP-Pro. After installing nForce2 drivers, system rebooted upon soft-off (both button push and WinXP shut down). Blue screen with Stop error - 0x0000007E (nv_agp.sys) etc.. Reinstalling the latest nForce2 drivers didn't help. Reinstalling WinXP didn't help. But.. rolling back from nv_agp.sys to the default MS driver worked for me.

Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> System devices -> NVIDIA nForce2 AGP Host to PCI Bridge -> Properties (right-click) -> Driver -> Driver Details (here you should see 2 drivers; nv_agp.SYS and pci.sys). To rollback to the WinXP default driver, clilck OK to close the driver details window, then click Roll Back Driver from the Properties/Driver window. Windows will ask you for confirmation and then it should switch to the pci.sys.

I am using an older PCI graphics board, thus I don't know what may happen if you have an AGP board. Worked for me. No guarantees, hope it helps someone..
