I have a 9700 pro from last year, it over heats a lot with OEM heatsink and the little biddy fan. With a Athlon XP 2000+ at 1.6666GHZ running 4X AGP (1 intake fan F; 1 exhaust R), this card will freez the game after 30 min. But if I were to remove the side pannel, It will take up to 2 hours or longer until freez.

This year I bought P4 3.0HT, with ECS mobo AGP 8X, I thought it might be the cooling problem of the video card, so i bought Cooler Master Cool vivia heatsink with heatpipe, and used Arctic Silver 5 for all the pieces. Then a new case that have intake fans (1 from top, 1 from side, 2 from front), Then I removed the 3.5" bay cover allow more air flow. In the rear I got thermal take's turbine fan that came with the 480W dual fan butterfly PSU. Then I added 1 60mmX60mmX25mm fan and a 80mm fan together blowing air to the bottom part of the ATI 9700's heatsink while the fan come with the heatsink is blowing at the top. [i counted, I got 12 fans total in my pc 20 some LEDs then 2 cold cathode, 1 more fan for northbridge, 1 for cpu. Noisy as F****]

Here's the sad part, ATI radeon 9700 pro will still freeze for games at 8X agp with fast write on with ati driver. (after 5 minutes). But if use 4X AGP with fast write off, it will never freeze. The temp of the heat sink is 32C idol, 40.2C maxon Load. I tried omega drivers too, but the only difference is that omega drivers will allow you to over clock and adjust voltage at your own risk, while ATI's driver wount allow you to do that.

After all this thing is a beast, I got 36,000 on aqua mark 3 at 4X FWoff. then 37, 660 at 8X. Not much a big difference. I got 96.2 FPS on HL2's video stress test, 80 FPS on most CSS maps 230fps in iceworld .
you people with agp 8 and 4x problems.
no agp accel. etc..
you need to find out what chipset you mother board uses and get the latest chipset drivers....
i have found after numerous rig builds with cards ranging from 9600pro to 9800xt that the via chipsets are crap.....
stay with the pe865 series 875 etc chipsets they seem to work best...
after installing the chipset drivers you may have to install dx9 and the vid card drivers again.....
hey i'm a nVidia fan and i will stay that way in the future but i have to say the truth in this case. it's a matter of time until this poor guys gets an answer to his problem, but the best ever video card made by ATI must be the All In wonder 9700 Pro. but anyways GT's rule
this is one hell of a thread !! 43 pages (read all of them) THANKS HWA

For those who come here and try to find an answer in the newer posts.
I worked through most of this forum to try find an answer why my 9700pro AIW is crashing in AoM-Titans and didn't crash in AoM.

Here is what I did:

- newest Catalyst (4.6)
- newest nForceDrivers 3.1?
- Disable Fast Write in Bios
- used the troubleshoot slider in advanced options to set it to lowest 3d accelaration possible
- switched on MouseTrails (which obviously helped alot against the crashs, why? no idea)
- upped DIMM voltage by 0.1v
- upped AGP voltage by 0.1v
- underclocked from 320/310 MHz to 290/290 MHz
- installed Omega Drivers
- reinstalled chipset drivers (because there could be agp driver corruption)
- ripped off all the cd-drives to lower power consumption

This all helped against the crashes but it only delayed them.
What really helped me was the following link:

http://www.frostytech.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1288

- opened my case took the front 80x80 cooler and let it blow directly on the card while the case was open

and TADAAA I could play for straight 1-2 hours without a crash.

- closed the case while the fan still was blowing onto the card and crashed in between 10 minutes

Now this would all be logical if I wouldn't have one cooler at the front of my case 1 just behind my CPU at the back wall, another one on the underside of my Enermax PSU and at last the standard fan at the backside of the PSU. These all should guarantee a constant airflow and I never had problems with overheating.

So my conclusion:

It must be the stinking cooler on the card. I never had problems before with other games but I didn't play many 3D games anyway so I guess that AoM - Titans is just using some more 3D features then AoM was and that this causes the card to overheat.
First thought of mine was that it is the PSU because I saw so many posts about it here. But if it was the PSU how could the system be stable with an opened case and all stuff plugged in.

I'll come back here and tell you if the replacement of the GPU cooler did solve the problem.

Edit Juli 21, 2004:

So I went to buy a new PSU (Antec True Power 550W) and installed a new GPU Cooler. I guess that the cooler does a fine job, at least its much more quiet then the old one. But the Antec PSU didn't even start with the 8RDA3+. Epox tech support told me that the PSU has to send a Power Good signal in between 0-50 ms or else the Mobo doesn't start. (wierd)
Still get crashes when the case is closed, maybe some other part is overheating?!

my System:

AMD Athlon XP 2500+ Thoroughbred
Epox 8rda3+ (nForce2)
1024 MB no name with infineon chips (2x512)
Creative Audigy Player
IBM DTLA.. 60GB
Hitachi 160GB
Pioneer DvD (105 something)
CD-RW
Enermax 350W PSU (bought 3 years ago as one of the best on the market)
As a note before the topic is closed...

I went through a lot trying to debug this machine (P4 2.4 GHz, ASUS P4P800 Deluxe) with the card, I've seen a lot of ideas for AMD boards, but not many Intels. This may help some of you:

AGP set to 4X
FastWrite Off
Spread Spectrum Off
Catalyst Drivers 4.1

The drivers are imprtant. I went through a bunch of them and found the newer drivers to be problems (for me, anyway) and the older drivers caused texture problems. Anyway, hope this helps some of you.
