I own Sony Vaio PCG-F430 notebook that has PIII 450 in it.
I did most of upgrade except CPU.

Is it possible to upgrade CPU on this notebook?

I own a Dell Inspiron 5000 with a 450 Celeron processor. I bought with the thought in the back of my mind that somehow I'd be able to upgrade the processor someday.

I am aware that there are several different mobile packages that Intel uses. MMC1, MMC2, Micro PGA, etc. At a business where I used to work I saw and spoke to a Dell certified tech that replaced the mobile processor cartridge. He wasn't very forthcoming about details, but I was convince I could to the upgrade, if I could just get my hands on the mobile cartridge. While I do find listings for Mobile PIIIs online, they list them as MicroPGA processors. However, on Dell's website and all the documentation for my system it only tells me that it has a MMC2 processor package.

Can I buy a MicroPGA boxed CPU and put it into a MMC2 cartridge?

If that's the case that would be wonderful. I'm sure I can go to at least 700MHz PIII and possibly a 850MHz PIII with my Inspiron. I should have no problems with BIOS, voltage or cooling requirements as the system was designed to ship anything up to an 850 PIII.

Could you clear up this matter for me? It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

"You don't talk about the damage that could be caused by putting a CPU that dissipates more power into a laptop chassis designed to dissipate less."

From the article:
"It simply doesn’t make sense to plug in a Mobile Pentium III at 1GHz if your notebook’s cooling solution can only cope with 700MHz, it’ll quickly overheat and start to display the dreaded BSODs or worse."
Just do a search for "Mobile P3" on pricewatch. P3-750 mobile, $225..... not too shabby. As for the other stuff, I have no idea.
Did you guys actually TRY replacing a Celeron CPU with a Pentium III? Did it actually WORK? FYI Speedstep requires BIOS support. Unless the BIOS supports SpeedStep (which a Celeron's machine wouldn't) things like the SpeedStep Applet won't work.

Another thing that makes me think you never even tried this is that you don't talk about voltage regulation. If you put a ULV part in for a regular CPU, you're only going to see a power savings if the voltage regulator is modified to deliver a lower Vcc to the CPU. You don't talk about the damage that could be caused by putting a CPU that dissipates more power into a laptop chassis designed to dissipate less.
PLEASE people, do NOT replace the CPU. HD and mem, fine.

PS oh yeah, one last point you glossed over - where are people supposed to BUY mobile processors? They're usually only sold to OEMs.
