OK, most of the people here have asked about problems w/ CD ROM drives or Itunes problems. I have 2 mp3 players (Creative Zen, and Zune) I have Quicktime but have had it for sometime w/o problems. My CD devices work fine. About a week ago, I was trying to get my Motorola to Sync w/ my computer. After numerous failed attempts, I gave up. and uninstalled everything. (Drivers, mod programs, etc.) Now, my Mp3 players have that Code 41 message, they charge, but I can't connect them to their respective software. I don't want to mess with regedit if it's going to mess with my CD drive. I ran a virus boot scan and that didn't take care of it, I got rid of the files that were suggested in the Uninstalling Itunes instructions, but left the quicktime program as it doesn't seem to be the source of the problem.

Can anyone help with getting my USB devices back w/o messing with my CD Rom Drive???

I had the problem some time ago and did not want to mess with editing the registry.
It happened to me when I installed Itunes and then decided to uninstall Itunes.
When I reinstalled Itunes the drives came back.
This also happens whenCD copy software is loaded and/or uninstalled.
I HAVE SPENT HOURS, no thats an understatment!!!!!!! ANYWAY i tried everything.....

- 3 DIFFERENT DRIVES
- WENT INTO BIOS TO SEE IF SOMEONE HAD MESSED WITH BOOT ORDER
- UN INSTALLED, RE INSTALLED
- INSTALLING DRIVERS FOR THREE DIFFERENT CDRW DRIVES
- MADE SURE MASTER WAS MASTER AND SLAVE WAS SLAVE
so when all that didnt work, i ORDERED an EXTERNAL CD/DVD ROM off of EBAY! not to mention spent the last of what was in my paypal account on a BADASS one. i was in LOUISIANA when all this occurred. TWO weeks later i move back to WISCONSIN. so that eBay package is just going to be floating around for god knows how long. not to mention its from OVERSEAS. THIS LITTLE REGISTRY PROBLEM HAS CAUSED WASTED TIME AND HOURS OF TWEAKING8) TO WHERE IN THE END I STILL COULDNT FIGURE IT OUT.

UNTIL NOW!!!!!! THANKS JOSH LIEBO

i would have to say ive been stumped on this for about 4 MONTHS. every other time i would get on my PC i would try something different. and im on everyday!!!!!! total HOURS SPENT actually trying to fix this problem about 20HRS!!!!!!!!!!!

I got this error message when uninstalling Norton Ghost 10. It caused both my CDRW and DVD to disappear. I followed the regedit advice and now I can see both drives. Then I encountered a new problem - XP wouldn't recognize the CD drive as a burner. According to some other KB advice I found that I needed to change the registry entry for drive type to make XP recognise the drive as a burner. I've done that plus confirmed that the "recording tab exists on the CD drive's properties page and that the "Enable Recording" box is checkmarked. I've also checked to see if it could read a music cd and it did. It just won't recognize or write to blank media. Does anyone have any ideas?

For all the people that are getting an error when trying to delete the key...

Do not delete the main Key folder, only delete the values on the right labeled upper/lower filters....

That is why you are getting an error when you try to delete.. you can not delete the main key.... just the entries...

Hah! This thread is still going! Good to see its helped folk out over the past couple of years though!!!

I STILL HAVE NOT AND WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANYTHING FROM APPLE!!!

I eventually fixed this, not by registry key edit or anything. I think it was a random kick to the side of the casing fixed it or something cause one day they just started working again without any registry intervention. Which was lucky. I traded up to a new PC last year anyway and Im a lot more careful about what I put on my PC.

I nearly went on a murderous rampage thanks to CODE 41 back in the day (im a lot calmer these days)......
this is the most funniest part with Me and my Pc .....never imagined such an error will occur....lot of thanks buddy...your method was successful for me.....registry key deleted and device uninstalled and scanned for new hardware...everything was back as it was ....

thanks a lot buddy...

ernest ofori said:
Anyway I have resolve the issue:

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
I also experienced this problem after uninstalling demo version of Nero 7 from Ahead software.
