Recently I bought a fancy HP optical mouse and had the same problem. <br /> <br /> What I did was to test my Laptop's Mouse (Small USB one) and the problem is not present anymore. So for those geeks trying to figure out what it is, let me tell you: My conclusion was that a static problem is present when the mouse communicates to your pc using the cable. <br /> <br /> USB mice are often powered differently and are not commonly affected by external sources. Then the typical vertical problem came about about 6 hours later (after running CCleaner....hummmmm). I then disabled the HID Mouse. I have no idea, this problem was date all the way back to late 2004 (at least in this thread). And strangely, haven't noticed this thread until now. Then again there are plenty of similar threads around in here, but the ones I remember are all about wireless mouse and/or virus related problems.<br /> <br /> So the mouse I have is an el cheapo wired (PS/2) LED mouse. Happens frequent enough, that the mouse pointer will suddenly move to a different location during windows use, and cause erratic mouse movements in games. I have eliminated the following causes.<br /> <br /> Eliminated causes:<br /> 1) The same problem happenned in 2 PCs, an older one with Win98, and a newer one with WinXP. So it's not because of a particular PC or OS. (Though I haven't test long enough with this mouse in Linux.)<br /> 2) Same problem with or without KVM switch. So it's not the KVM.<br /> 3) Same problem on or off line. If online, it's from the computer with the most up-to-date virus protection. So it's not something from the network or virus.<br /> 4) I don't use mouse pad, but this mouse was used on two different desks surfaces, same problem. So it's not the surface.<br /> 5) I cleaned both the lens and LED light surface with alcohol, so it's not cleaniness.<br /> 6) Definitely not because of vibration or too much tension on the mouse wire.<br /> <br /> Obviously, I can Not rule out John's suggestion of RF interference. I need to find myself some ferrites to experiment with. But what bugs me is that, this only started to happen recently. The pad is purple and the picture has a white border. I'm using a logitech MX518. I have the mouse moving by itself thing. I checked with logitech and they confirmed what I was seeing. When the light is sitting on a split dark and light area, it moves by itself. If I move it a little, it stops. It doesn't happen that often so it's no biggy. I also get times when the mouse starts moving erratically. That is caused by cat hair getting up inside the laser opening and breaking the beam. A tweezer usually fixes that. I've been seeing this particular problem for five years so far, across many motherboards (all running windows, *co*incidentally, I have not seen it yet on Mac or Linux, even when I use the same mouse on all these OS's, although to be strictly fair, I haven't had to fix as many Mac's or Linux's as Win's, it's just a statistical thing, although I do get to play with them often), lots of kinds of mice, including the one I'm using now. The mouse pointer travels by itself when the mouse is sitting still, until I move the mouse or something vibrates it. It happens with cheap mice, expensive mice, optical ones (including laser), ball ones, track balls, wireless, and one other kind I can't recall the name of offhand. I have taken them apart and cleaned them as thoroughly as I can, repositioned the sensors and emitters inside, swapped mice with friends, rerouted the wiring from the back of the computer to isolate the mouse cable from all others, and several other activities within my budget. I have also tried with and without speakers connected, with the tower on the desk or on the floor with vibration isolation.<br /> I have posted questions on too many boards to keep track of, and exhausted the patience of many technicians and an engineer or two. One thing I haven't tried yet is the ferrite core, I'll have to dumpster dive a while before I find some more of them.
