well i can tell you why it happens, its the cheapness in optical mice.. i have that with all my cheapo mice, theyre very sensitive to vibrations and such... u cant really do anything to remove it, just make sure its on a steady surface, or get a better mouse.. i use a creative gamer mouse which i paid about 30 bucks for, cheaper than most gamer mice yes, but i havent had any of those vibrations from it...

i use 4 different computers with 3 of them using the cheap-o mice.. its not OS, software etc, its just the laser quality of the mouse..

I have to say it's been a while since I've been seeing this problem ocurring on many computers. Recently I bought a fancy HP optical mouse and had the same problem.

What I did was to test my Laptop's Mouse (Small USB one) and the problem is not present anymore. So for those geeks trying to figure out what it is, let me tell you: My conclusion was that a static problem is present when the mouse communicates to your pc using the cable.

USB mice are often powered differently and are not commonly affected by external sources. Even with headsets that are not powered trough USB you will have the same behavior as noise of bad microphone recordings.

Hope it helps!

Note: I had to register for this

Well, lots of different problems here, but none I've been able to latch onto....some of those who say it's the surface material- mine keeps doing it no matter if I've got the darn thing 6 feet up in the air. What's worse- if I'm using Extended Desktop and it goes to the lower monitor in this mode, it takes me a while before I figure it out.

This has been happening to me for a number of years- and as I can recall, ever since I got my Saitek X52 system, although I can't specifically blame this on it. What I DO know is if I disable the HID-Compliant Mouse (that refers to the Saitek "Magic Mouse"....hummmm) in Device Manager, the problem goes away.

Today I've had it happen to me twice- the frist time it was scrolling horizontally on me, so I went into the Mouse setup and disabled the Horiz scroll. Then the typical vertical problem came about about 6 hours later (after running CCleaner....hummmmm). I then disabled the HID Mouse. I never have the problem after doing this.

Well, you don't say, I am experiencing the very same mouse behavior described in this thread, just recently. I have no idea, this problem was date all the way back to late 2004 (at least in this thread). And strangely, haven't noticed this thread until now. Then again there are plenty of similar threads around in here, but the ones I remember are all about wireless mouse and/or virus related problems.

So the mouse I have is an el cheapo wired (PS/2) LED mouse. Happens frequent enough, that the mouse pointer will suddenly move to a different location during windows use, and cause erratic mouse movements in games. I have eliminated the following causes.

Eliminated causes:
1) The same problem happenned in 2 PCs, an older one with Win98, and a newer one with WinXP. So it's not because of a particular PC or OS. (Though I haven't test long enough with this mouse in Linux.)
2) Same problem with or without KVM switch. So it's not the KVM.
3) Same problem on or off line. If online, it's from the computer with the most up-to-date virus protection. So it's not something from the network or virus.
4) I don't use mouse pad, but this mouse was used on two different desks surfaces, same problem. So it's not the surface.
5) I cleaned both the lens and LED light surface with alcohol, so it's not cleaniness.
6) Definitely not because of vibration or too much tension on the mouse wire.

Obviously, I can Not rule out John's suggestion of RF interference. I need to find myself some ferrites to experiment with. But what bugs me is that, this only started to happen recently. The mouse was used before with no problem at all.

You see, if it's RF interference, it should be a random event. Why is this happened so frequently, to many people in different geographical locations, to different brands of mouse, and all behave with erie similarity?

Just a thought, can this be a firmware issue with a particular mouse chip?
I have a mouse pad that holds pictures you can slip in from underneath. The pad is purple and the picture has a white border. I'm using a logitech MX518. I have the mouse moving by itself thing. I checked with logitech and they confirmed what I was seeing. When the light is sitting on a split dark and light area, it moves by itself. If I move it a little, it stops. It doesn't happen that often so it's no biggy. I also get times when the mouse starts moving erratically. That is caused by cat hair getting up inside the laser opening and breaking the beam. A tweezer usually fixes that. Those are my issues, and fixes.

Well, when a thread is old it tends to be a sign of a persistent problem. I've been seeing this particular problem for five years so far, across many motherboards (all running windows, *co*incidentally, I have not seen it yet on Mac or Linux, even when I use the same mouse on all these OS's, although to be strictly fair, I haven't had to fix as many Mac's or Linux's as Win's, it's just a statistical thing, although I do get to play with them often), lots of kinds of mice, including the one I'm using now. The mouse pointer travels by itself when the mouse is sitting still, until I move the mouse or something vibrates it. It happens with cheap mice, expensive mice, optical ones (including laser), ball ones, track balls, wireless, and one other kind I can't recall the name of offhand. I have taken them apart and cleaned them as thoroughly as I can, repositioned the sensors and emitters inside, swapped mice with friends, rerouted the wiring from the back of the computer to isolate the mouse cable from all others, and several other activities within my budget. I have also tried with and without speakers connected, with the tower on the desk or on the floor with vibration isolation.
I have posted questions on too many boards to keep track of, and exhausted the patience of many technicians and an engineer or two. One thing I haven't tried yet is the ferrite core, I'll have to dumpster dive a while before I find some more of them. Thank you John Albrich for the suggestion, it makes a lot of sense.

ROFL, no. Every year the ants invade. A month or two later, they are gone again but only to be followed by a wave of crickets. During the fall, all the damn lady bugs try to move in. During the winter, it's pretty quiet until the ants return in the summer. That's just the region I live in (surrounded by soy bean/field corn fields).

I had numerous mice do this for one of three reasons:
1) It's a crappy Logitech and randomly sends the pointer flying to the top left corner (causes a look at the sky+turn around sensation in FPS).
2) There's a little hair stuck on to it that's vibrating while you move the mouse causing erratic behavior.
3) There's an ant stuck in the little hole where the lens is causing it to move randomly albeit not very far (true story, happened twice to me).
