Unfortunately, even when using any proxy, third party objects can be used to obtain your IP very easily. Example?: When browsing to yahoo.com through a proxy, many of the ads you see on the page are actually hosted on other servers (not @ yahoo). When you view these third party ads hosted on other servers, your browser (and PC) can easily be forced to negotiate a direct connection to the 3rd party server to download said object, completely bypassing the proxy. I'm sure you can see how this would make it easy to discover a proxy surfers "real" IP with a second "server" and some simple log comparison. Still, proxies are a wonderful thing for people in other countries who want to circumvent government/ISP censorship of the internet.

You could use an anonymizer proxy to surf more or less anonymous:

http://anon.inf.tu-dresden.de/index_en.html

"Instead of connecting directly to a webserver, users take a detour, connecting with encryption through several intermediaries, so-called mixes."

Jason, et al

It is the oldest trick in the book really, although not a foolproof way to hide your IP, esp. not for those that have better tools that the IP tracers you'll find around the net. Here's a little how-to:

Start IE > Tools > Internet Options
Select Connections > LAN Settings > Flag 'Use a proxy server for your lan'
Open up a second IE window and go to http://www.proxy4free.com and select a proxy
Obviously you'd select a proxy which is anonymous or better and in the country of choice
Enter the IP and port number and click OK, you're all set now
Remember to change proxy server monthly, weekly or daily depending on your preferences
Sander,

Couldn't help but notice you wrote 'After routing my IP address through an anonymous proxy server in the US I however managed to unlock the content' this got me kind of puzzled as that opens up possiblities for anonymous surfing and avoiding leaving a cookie trail for big brother to follow. Mind telling us exactly how you accomplished this?
Another very bad idea. I can't tell you how many times I've had to re-purchase software just because my job called for international travel or more than a year elapsed since I purchased the software originally. Only a few companies have been decent enough to keep records. It is bad enough that they constantly upgrade and then want the boxtop or owners manual front page from years previous. Most place the burden of proof on me, hundreds of miles away from home, to have all the license information.
