I second SuperXP and agree with Calc. I recommend you go for an eMachines' laptop. Sure, you won't have the bragging rights and you may get a few chuckles but you can always laugh right back at them with their non-64-bit processors. And as Calc said, I recommend you stay away from ASUS.

2 years "part time" sales? With all due respect I've been in the trenches supporting users for a decade longer.
A 50%+ failure rate on a batch of 17 new laptops in the span of 7 months is the worst I've ever seen or heard about (but I'm sure there are worse ;-) and had the displeasure of trying to support.
I had a drive (my second) on one fail just today. I have contacted the supplier and we are in negotiations to return all 17 systems as it is costing us thousands of dollars in downtime.
I have supported/used Gateway, Dell, Toshiba, IBM, Compaq, HP and ASUS laptops. I have had the best luck with Toshiba and IBM.
We will be replacing these with IBM's even though I'm a little leary considering IBM sold their PC division they have been the most trouble free laptops to date.
Well ok, that's 50% of 17 laptops....I've been doin sales part time for about 2 years now, and over a 2 year period, which is a much fairer time for deviation, Asus have statistically had the lowest returns due to failure. And we've sold a lot more than 17.
Run, don't walk away from these laptops. I purchased 17 through ABS (The S1300N) in May, 2004. To date I have experienced over a 50% failure rate. I currently have 5 systems down, 4 are dead, will not even boot - one has a bad keyboard, I have had one catastrophic hard drive failure but for the most part - power supplies and motherboards that just die. 2 machines have been RMA'd twice now. I am currently in the process of purchasing new systems and will be returning every damn one of these poorly designed pieces. In my 12 years in IT I have never seen a worse piece of hardware, not to mention crappy customer service (I use that term lightly) by ABS PC.

Since I don't have the money to spend on a Apple Powerbook G4, I've been looking at Asus notebooks, they have some nice priced barebones whitebox one's, looking at the A2H model $725 canadian
http://usa.asus.com/products/notebook/nbindex.htm

I would prefer the one of these two but money is the main concern
http://www.asus.com/products/notebook/a4series/a4000k/a4000k_overview.htm
http://www.asus.com/products/notebook/a2series/a2000k/a2000k_overview.htm

Negative comments aside from someone who owned a Dell lol, I've only heard good reviews about the Asus notebooks.
Well it can vary between models, but just recently a few have been coming back because windows wasn't booting properly....methinks there was a dodgy batch of hard drives or something, but since I'm sales and not tech support I don't get to find out too much. The most I can do is draw my own conclusions from the reports of the customers. I'm usually fairly accurate tho
So Calc..."on other people's experience I've made a valid conclusion"....how valid can a conlcusion be with no experience of your own?

About the laptops tho, they're superb. The electrical retailers I work in sell Asus, Acer, HP, and Fujitsu Siemens laptops, and we get very few Asus and Fujitsus back. My brother has one himself, and I think it's a damn good performer. Don't listen to this anti-Asus bandwagon, cos a lot of them just go by what they read on here.
A good company for Laptop's & Notebook's is eMachines. According to a USA/Canada survay, they are #1 in customer service/support, best hardware etc. The second is IBM.

I am assuming you are looking for a Athlon 64 notebook? That is if you are looking for 64-Bit support in the near future.
No flames here. No forum without opinions. I've never had a bad experience with Asus (3 boards), but I don't get quite the exposure to them as a lot of you. Haven't run across a bad review, but maybe I'm not looking in the right place. Time will tell.
Ok what I meant is that Asus is arguably the crappiest company ever (its positioned w/ ECS and maybe Albatron). So, since its a laptop made by Asus, it's probably gonna be a 5uX0r. I'm probably going to get flamed in this thread for saying Asus is crappy, but from other people's experiences, I have made a valid conclusion.
