Dear all.

i just bought the Dell 5150 and had it for 2 weeks. now it has this problem

quote from Joe k ( here is a condition that we currently cannot repair. This condition is apparent by noting the activity of the front "status" Power and battery lights. These two lights will flash together every 6 to 7 seconds, this condition is a severe power fault on the motherboard.)

Does anyone know how to repair it??????

i would be most thankfull

this has been a great thread to read though it mostly inspires me want to throw this horrible device into a vat of acid.. ;-) Someday soon, I will replace.

My exact problem doesn't seem to be listed here:

I have random screen video freezes, where pointer freezes and keyboard no longer works. I have to force-reboot by holding down the power button.

The weird part is, this only happens AFTER I install SP2. And it is not the hard drive as I replaced it at one point when I was under warranty and it happened before and after. I have a Go Fx 5020 video card which I think is related, as it doesn't freeze in safe mode or when I uninstall the video card drivers.

I recently got hosed with a virus and ended up doing a full reformat to XP Corporate and it was the same deal again: All is well until I update to SP2. I'm currently updated to SP3, actually, and the problem still happens. It can happen when software is open or when nothing is running. It doesn't seem to relate to overheating as it has happened 10 minutes after I power it up for the first time of the day.

I have read something about ROLLING BACK THE PROCESSOR for Inspiron users, but the pages/articles seem to relate to much older models than the 5150, and a slightly different issue..

If anyone has any insight regarding fixing this, or services/processes I should turn off, I'd be forever grateful.

btw, anyone who also has the no_longer_supported go fx 5200 drivers, this page tells you how to upgrade to the newest forceware drivers after editing the inf file (to include your video card) http://fredfred.net/skriker/index.php/geforce-fx-go5200-with-l...ng_pref=en

that advice did not help me though.

Thanks in advance for any insight you have!

Mark,
If you read this thread, you know that I'm not a fan of Dell. That being said, your problem is most likely a failed hard drive. If you have some type of test software on a CD, you can use that to check it by booting to the CD and running the test software. There are plenty of they on the Internet for free.

2 days ago my 5150 just froze while I was on the internet, wasnt able to do anything, crtl alt del, nothing would work. I powered off the computer and now it will not boot up at all. I just get a dark screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner. the fan will still run, the lights go on, and the battery charges. After hitting the power button a few hundred times it might even try to boot up, the windows xp logo will come on the screen but it will freeze. If anyone could help me with this problem I would appreciate it

Thanks
Good Evening.

I am sorry to bother everyone, I come from the United Kingdom and i own a Dell Inspiron 5150. i bought this as a fix up job as it was not working at the time i bought it. i have noticed the lights on the front of the laptop lights up, when i have the laptop pluged in to the charger the charging light comes up green, when i try to turn the laptop on it doesnt turn on at all all i get is the power light flashes and the charging light stayed on as solid green, if i then take charger out i still get flasging green light but the charging light goes off. i have had a look at the pages before and have noticed some bits mentioned about the board may have a broken bit in it, if this is the case then can someone please give me a detailed description on where this broken section would be, i have had a look but could not see anything obvious. thank you for your help..

I'm sorry to tell you, that, in that case, it's better to look for another notebook. Actually, whatever the notebook, those will be better than this awfull Dell computer ...
I send that notebook to hell months ago. During the three years of garanty, this notebook colapsed 3 or 4 times, and all in it has been changed (mother card (2x), monitor (1x), hard disk (1x), CPU (1x), ACDC transformer (1x), DVD (1x)). The last change of the mother board implied that the battery did not work anymore (due to a voltage problem). This happened days before the end of the garanty...so ...

Finally, what is the conclusion of all this : Dell garanty is superbe ... but I, and my Faculty, will never buy a Dell again. Never ...

while the computer is on and the screen is black, shine a flashlight at the screen, if you can still see the windows icons and stuff your invertor board or lights in the screen have gone bad.
Most of the time its the invertor board which can be bought on e-bay for a decent price.
