I really don't see why anyone can even DISCUSS if DVD writers could be banned. Then you should also ban cars - they can drive faster than the speeding limits, they can be used in crimes, etc. Ridiculous!!! Did it actually occur to anyone that DVD writer can be used for regular file backup, photo storage, etc.????

Ban movies - it would be easier!

No saint here *LOL* so down to basics: Does anyone have experiences with CloneDVD versus DVD Schrink? Some talk about the great quality in DVD Scrhink due to the analysis - but I must say I like CloneDVD. But can anyone persuade me to switch to DVD Schrink?

I always figure if you can say it on T.V., it cannot possibly be offensive.

re: the copyright thing and the comment that the MPAA and RIAA aren't that powerful to prevent hardware from coming out in a region.

I think Carlos you are wrong on that. Certainly they have tried via lawsuits to effectively ban certain pieces of hardware (like the VCR) and failed (thank God), but they have learned and now apply huge pressure to manufacturers to incorporate standards that would prevent copying of their material. Moreover, they want legislation that would make it illegal to sell hardware that they don't approve of in terms of copyright protection in the United States. This is made all the easier thanks to the convergence of hardware and "software" companies (like Sony and its acquisition of Paramount, etc.).

Any lobbying group which can force massive legislative changes to copyright and intellectual property protection on the basis of rather sketchy proof of actual loss and which is clearly not in the best interests of society as a whole without much Congressional resistance is clearly a very powerful group.

I find the whole IP protection system in the U.S. and the way its going a very frightening thing when you consider how dependent we are all becoming on IP just to live day to day. Just imagine all the things that you do on a daily basis that in some way are connected to IP. And that dependence is going to get worse.
I have dvd-decrypter and shrink on my machine (and Nero), but I never run decrypter to burn. Shrink burns it for me....unless you are saying it opens up decrypter automaticallly to burn things for me which I am pretty sure its not doing.

Perhaps the version you are using in the article is old?

Here's a post to clarify a few things. I'll steer clear of the whole 'copyright' issue for now, as this differences per country and sometimes even per state. One of the questions I've seen raised in this thread is why I use both DVDshrink and DVDdecryptor, and why one application doesn't suffice.

DVDshrink has a very easy to use and intuitive interface, so that even first time users can easily find their way around. Unfortunately it does not include a burning engine, thus relies on a installed DVD/CD burning application to fullfill that roll. Nero could do that, but we've only produced incompatible disks and coasters with Nero thusfar, so DVDdecrypter is the better choice.

DVDdecrypter does have a built in burning engine, and a very capable one I might add, so the combination of these two applications will be all you need to make successful backups of your DVDs. In essence DVDdecrypter can do the same things as DVDshrink does, but it is harder to setup and demands knowledge of a DVDs filestructure etc. Hence we use DVDshrink to edit or decode the DVD to the HD and DVDdecrypter to backup the file. This way around we're using the best of both worlds, and can guarantee a easy-to-use backup solution for you to use.
Ollie, is this the CDClone Ollie? Regardless, thanks so much for the information. I had no idea there was that much difference between DVD +/- R. I normally only use DVD+R and have had excellent results with them. Since my burner will burn either one, I guess that from what I am hearing it is wiser to use -R DVDs for duplicating so that a stand alone DVD player can play them. Peace and thanks for the info.

I Seriously dont remember why we used to use DVDdecryptor

i just always did.

but i found sometimes DVDshrink refused to copy a DVD if it came to a scratch where as you could set DVDdecryptor to have multiple attempts.

as i said before theres a bruteFORCE key generating option in DVD d that lets you rip wrong region DVDs on dvd rom.

they both need Nero installed to burn? if not that was a reason

and Sean B you are definetly poorly Educated in the Matter

RIAA and MPAA do not despite what you believe have the power to ban DVD writers. MP3 players Digital TV.
they tryied and they got stuck with the B class region RPC 4 locking mechanism on all computer DVD driver which allows it to be changed 4 times. imposed DMCA to ban DVD recorders and DVR recordes that can bypass CSS encryption.

They didnīt succeed when VHS and VCR appeared in the Mid 80īs

and piracy is rampid in Asia because tactics and Copyright enforcement in such countries isnt as tight as the US.
It is no way for you to justify your actions.

as for RIAA and MPAA encouraging piracy so they can fine people
have you flipped your lids?? do have any Idea what that would cost you to do?
Legal costs $thousands to track and sue 1 infringer, at the end of which they get a $3000 out of court settlement. Computer Security Experts LAwyers hundreds of Man hours, Mass amounts of Internet accessible systems to launch the attacks on Kazaa network.

not to mention the people they dont catch. who dont buy the product due to the theft.

but they did technically inadvertently encourage using piracy methods to acquire music so they could use it on portable players. AS music companies refused to improve their product.

Movies on VHS lasted 15 years before being upgraded to DVD in 1996 (quality upgrade)
Music Cdīs introduced in 1980 are still used 25 years later and no signs of change.
Iīm Whining??? i was just warning

It isnīt illegal to lend your DVD to friend but lending a copy which they may keep is.
Copying DVDīs isnt illegal
but bypassing css is against the DMCA and is illegal

MPAA and RIAA now have some power in Australia under the Free trade agreement
the Australian Copyright laws now odibe by the US copyright laws including DMCA.

I copy my DVDś so i donīt damage them but lending out the copies is a criminal act.
I use DVD shrink and once had to buy a region 1 disc after MGM told me there was no plans to release the movie i wanted in Australia, so i forced it to decrypt on a region 4 DVD rom drive.

and Hiring a DVD and copying is definetly illegal even if you stupidly justify it by saying they make money from it. If you hire it for $3 copy it return it, you will not be renting it a second time wish was a common practise the time of VHS. They lose money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
especially if noone else hires it any time soon and it sits unused on their shelves for periods of time.

I just have a little morals when it comes to movies i lack from Music companies.
A music CD costs me $20-$30 AU production cost $10-40 million
A movie DVD costs me $10-$30 AU production costs vary $10-200million

How can RIAA and music companies possibly charge that much???

With Blockbuster not charging late fees, people can keep DVDs for up to a month.

If you rent a DVD(such as one that just came out), copy it, and then return it within a 3 day period, they're actually making more money because they can then rent it to someone else.

Edit: Yeah, Region 1 is the US. The MPAA and RIAA only have jurisdiction on going after copywrite violations in the US, unless the issue ends up being big, multi-national piracy.

I'm saying, the MPAA and RIAA have enough power to ban DVD writers in the US, which would end piracy in the only area they're whining about.
Sean B, they can catch people file sharing because they are doing it online

But how would they catch me selling DVD's (say to friends @ work) I copied on my computer

I stopped doing it, & now just repair, & upgrade comps
