If anyone gets "rejected" from windows update cause of this all they have to do it go the "manage add ons" section in "internet options", in IE then "Programs" and "disable" the Microsoft Genuine advantage" one and then they can get updates. Its as simple as that. I dont know why MS made it that easy, at the same time taking the effort to weed out any "bad" copies of windows.

There you go again Brian

This is illegal, that is illegal, I think "liable" is a more appropiate term, If you violate MS agreement by selling or distributing it you have committed a crime, & can be prosecuted

However if you only use multiple copies on your personal machines, while you may be in "breach of contract", & may be "civily liable", no "crime" has been commited

You have not commited any felony, or misdemeanor (which you can be prosecuted for)

I have tried, & tried , & tried to educate ppl that doesn't know the difference between "civil proceedings", & "criminal proceedings"

In civil proceedings you are sued, not prosecuted

When I went to high school in the late 70's, & early 80's civil law, & criminal law were mandatory

What happened to this generation that don't understand the basic "format" of our civil, & criminal courts?

For those that know how to read, read for your self

U. S. Federal Copywright Law

§ 506. Criminal offenses5
(a) Criminal Infringement. - Any person who infringes a copyright willfully either -

(1) for purposes of commercial advantage or private financial gain, or

(2) by the reproduction or distribution, including by electronic means, during any 180-day period, of 1 or more copies or phonorecords of 1 or more copyrighted works, which have a total retail value of more than $1,000,

You do not own Windows.
MS owns windows.
You license it.
You own a license to install it on ONE machine.

It is 100% illegal to install it on 2 machiens concurrently.
You can be prosecuted.

I repeat, it is 100% illegal to install a copy of windows on twoo different systems at the same time unless you own a multi-colume license, which you don't.

No one is oging to go after you, but it is illegal.

Beyond that, MS detects pirated copies when installing updates it several ways. The main way is to check the cd-key. If lots of people use it, then they blacklist it, and refuse to give you certain updates.

I have a pirated copy of xp pro on disc with a pirated key. I downloaded the sp2 via net install. When you install or reinstall xp, on a pc, you get asked one time for a registration key, then it does its thing and installs. Next, install sp2 and dx9.0c via CD, external HD,etc,... then install all the other bulls**t updates using windows update. My point being, you only need to enter a registration key "ONE" time...just once, for the initial xp installation, after that you can install any updates you want. I downloaded sp2 and dx9.0c before I install them, rather than just run them from windows update. Then you can have them for you or someone else when doing a fresh xp install, without having to bother with getting online asap once you are finished with the installation. You still with me there, Jim Patel??? The key to xp is the word: 'manually.' Kids, the word for today is 'manually.' Everything 'automatic' ends up being a bigger pain in the arse' than learning how to do this stuff yourself, manually. Unless you have all the time and money and patience in the world....before you go through the hoops, try to go around them.
Does anyone "KNOW" how Microsoft could know if you have an "ILLEGAL" installation?

I think "illegal may be a "stretch" even here, If I own (2) comps, & Microsoft asks me when I activate do I have it installed on more than (1) comp & I say no, what makes it a crime? I could be liable for monetary damages, then again , maybe not, is Microsoft agreement enforceable (under U.S. law), if you use it alone on multiple systems, but you have not distributed it to other people, it certainly isn't a crime, I don't even see how it is wrong, or possible liability

Can Sony make you buy a seperate CD for each of your CD players?
I have 1 right now. and they can stop updates if they want wont bother me I just wont update but someone will find a way to get round it, maybe if companys like British Telecom would get their finger out and make Linux drivers for their Modems then we could go and get a proper OS with an internet connection.
10 released today including malicous ones, and over 86 prior to this. Some of them including Sp2 when it was originally released. This is using the programed timed automatic updates system since I put SP2. on 6th Aug 2004.. Many of the recent updates in the last few monyths are updating some that were put on earlier, after MS found problems with them. Storing them on a CD as suggested by one member, is useless as when you decide to reinstall them, they will be out of date anyhow. Proof of that is obvious, as since SP2 was released , the earlier updates on SP2 have been modified, many times since.

In my opinion it is best to use legal copies of Win XP, and update regulary, as you don't know what Microsoft has up it's sleeve. There are so many updates and it's not worth the hassle,

Best Wishes to all
Take Care
(i have the feb 2004, and the SP2 CD's) i'm sure that they will release more in the future, so couldn't you use those with an illegal CD-Key?

Well theyre not obliged, microsoft decided to let illegal copies get updates just before sevice pack 2 was released, and then afterwards they got rid of this, its because they wanted illegal copies to get access to the security features of SP2 cuz the unprotected illegal copies were thought as a way for viruses to spread easily...

you can still get updates for an illegal copy....its just harder and sometimes impossible depending on the update.
