P4s are no longer used for highend gaming, and pretty much the same with Athlon 64s. Only people like me who didn't want to upgrade yet are still using a socket 939 based system (or a 478/early 775).

Core and Phenom are the current Intel/AMD offerings.

Ummmmmm Archie,

have you looked at the date of the last post in this thread??? You're coming up on 3yr old thread....

Also, you need to get out of the dark ages.... CPU scene of today is totally different from years past.. You need to update yourself on the AMD and Intel offerings. The past is history for the archives... You will be so surprised of what has happened since those times.

Of course, the fastest Pentium M, the 780, under load, consumes less than the slowest Athlon64 at idle. Dare I say... pwnd?

The best intel pentium cpu for gaming is the Intel® Pentium® M processor 780. 2.16ghz clock for clock even beats the AMD 64 clocked at same mhz. But cost too much.

I've recently configured an Alienware ALX SLI system and a rather interesting dilemma occurred. Which processor would be the best for hardcore gaming, the AMD 64 FX-57 or Intel Xeon 3.6 GHZ? All of the comparisons I've found on the internet have been between the AMD 64 FX-55 and Pentium 4 Processors. I've read most of this thread, and many people that are well versed in processor specs chat here, so I figure this is the best place for this question. Thanks for your time.

I don't see the Pentium 4 killing the Athlon XP. The results are quite close with the Pentium 4 on top. Now one advantage with these synthetic benchmarks is the SSE & SSE2 which the P4's have.

Don't matter anyway, both companies went different paths with AMD being the better path. And clock for clock, all Athlon XP & 64 CPU’s will win in performance hands down.

Intel's path was Ultra High Clock Speed
AMD's path was CPU innovation & Architecture.

But it does look like Intel finally realized there big mistake & are now working on getting rid of or updating there age old Net Burst.
