My "power fan" has also been defect for about 9 months now. Maybe that's the cause of the problem...

Greetings, all

I'm having the same problem and have had it since December, 2007. I was about to purchase a new setup when the price was getting higher and higher and I decided to have a second look at my old setup.

I suspect the PSU.

I am guessing it started when I installed my third HDD, an SATA disk on 500 GB by Samsung. The PC would freeze momentarily, for a few seconds or up to several minutes, or days (rebooted probably after waiting half an hour, or something).

Actually, it would freeze for one or two seconds, resume to normal speed for two or three seconds, and repeat, until I just rebooted.

Soon it wouldn't boot at all. So I tried disconnecting the SATA HDD and it occasionally worked.

I'm not too sure on the details but in December 2007 I got the "System failed CPU test" message. After turning it off and on for a day or two (haha) it worked stable for a short while, maybe a few days.

Still not too sure on the details but eventually nothing worked. I put it away for 2 months and then bought a new CPU. Didn't work.

Put it away for another 4 months, which would be a week ago, when I was considering a new setup but decided to try to fix my old PC because there is a lot of compatibility specifics you have to check when buying a new setup and it was just more convenient to get my old system working... for much cheaper, no less.

So I messed around with it a few days ago, reset CMOS (for the first time), took out graphics card (again), and got the "System failed VGA test" once or twice. Then it was back to CPU test.

The odd thing is that when I hold the power button for 3 seconds to shut it down, the CPU fan speeds up a bit before shutting down.

I also found a jumper floating around in my case; if anyone has a diagram of appropriate jumper settings that would be great. I also could take some pictures for you to check if the MB is fried in any way; it doesn't look as new, to put it that way, in some of the electrical components, and some capacitors are a tiny bit bent (maybe by a single degree) but I doubt that has had any impact.

Thanks for any help

Yes, take the motherboard back while you can, tell them that the board is defective and you want a different brand. Do not exchange for another asus.

hmmm guyz.....
recently i got a new pc

Pentium 4, 3.2ghz
motherboard: Asus p4p800-e deluxe
6600gt card
512 ddr ram

anyway, it was all fine untill one day i turned my pc on and everything froze at the start up screen
like the 1st screen said my graphix card name, then it went to the main 1st page where says press DEL to get into bios... so it said my cpu speed: 3.20ghz, then it starts to check NVRAM TESTING then it froze... so yeah cant do anything... after few resets my monitor didnt turn on and it wwas saying "SYSTEM FAILED CPU TEST" i dunno wat to do, i left the battery out for 10 mins nothing... i put in another ram... nothing... i put in another card nothing... then all of a sudden my screen worked again but still froze... then it went back to system cpu failed n no image.. i have a good power supply, thermaltake... so i dont know wat to do, should i get a new motherboard? please help, i read alot of threads about this... but no one has a solution.. few people say just make sure everything sitted right... but please help.. so should i go n get another motherboard?

Man, those ASUS guys are nuts....if you ever get a hold of an ASUS customer service guy why not try nailing an a8v to his forehead.

I can recommend the A8N-SLI Deluxe, its phantastic. But its' PCIe, althoug http://www.heise.com published a report saying there is an PCIe to AGP adapter coming out soon, so you might try that....maybe. Anyway, see ya

Yeah, it's bloody rediculous. I didn't buy the boad because I liked the asus brandname, but merely because of the features it had. But if theres a reason to AVOID a brand, its stupid crap like this.

I have had zero luck with mine, and right now I think I made the right decision in buying another mobo, because it just wasn't worth my bloody time. It's certainly against my normal policy, but you might just have to give up on this one (I had to).

Well, sorry for not getting back any sooner but here's my update ...
I received the 3rd RMA on my A8v Deluxe (Bios 1008) from ASUS and guess what? The problem persisted. I then called technical support and I was transferred to 2nd level and I was told I had to deal with RMA again!!! I said to myself, ok don't panic, I'm not the only one who goes through this kind of turmoil ...
I called RMA and I was told to send board again to be replaced. I included a letter with my shipment asking for the second time in bold writing that I receive a Bios 1009 Rev. 2 Board. I got my replacement board and it came with Bios version 1008 !!!! I crossed my fingers and hoped that it would work this time. Unfortunately, it didn't work and I still got the "system failed CPU test" prompt. I still didn't want to give up and I decided to try a Kingston Hyper X 512 mb DDR module I had just bought to see that may be my Corsair TwinX ram was defective. Sadly, I still got Betty complaining about my CPU. So now, I am left with two options to contemplate: a) to continue to RMA board for a 5th time (I never had this problem go for so long) or b) get another brand of board. After enduring over 3 1/2 months of never being able to boot up my rig, I'm inclined to go for the latter. I am a patient person, but there's only a limit for patience itself. In any event, thanks for the support and quick response. I had great hopes for the A8V Deluxe. I guess I will join the group of those who will never buy from ASUS again .....
well sorry for telling you about the BIOS flashing and RAM in B1 stuff, but here is what I had:

I built two AMD machines, both with a winchestere core and both with the A8V. So guess what: the first A8V had the new bios and supported the winchester perfectly, no reboots, nothing. Everythings just fine (PSU and graphic cards were IDENTICAL, same with RAM, those were even from the same shippment, almost identical serial numbers!!)

the SECOND A8V, purchased the same day from the same store had an older BIOS, did not support the winchester, and the funny thing
- sometimes POST failed
- sometimes monitor went black
- sometimes windows could be installed, everything ok, until I turned on DDR400 instead of DDR333
- sometimes crash when enabling cool'n'quiet

it was the ultimate enigma, really. This ******** thing even worked perfectly for a day! With the "wrong" CPU installed!!!!!

So, sorry about telling you flashing bios and crap.

STORY: I have the A8N-SLI deluxe in the meantime. Worked for three weeks, then the CHIPSET FAN failed and burned the who0le thing down, one SATA drive after another failed, screen went black for a second just to come back to life again, it was the strangest error i ever had. Funny thing: No temperature alarm was given, although hardware monitor in bios was enabled, chipset warning was enabled too. Man i was so angry. How come those guys fit 120million transistors on half a square inch. But they can't build a good 40mm chipset fan! What???

Hei there! I believe I have the solution. Sure you have the AMD 64 with the Winchester core. You need a bios update to make this mobo support it. These steps worked with me:

- prepase boot disk with flash utility and newest bios
- complete mobo reset, clear cmos using the jumper (VERY important)
- install as little RAM as possible, max is 256MB that worked with me, one 512 doesn't do it
- turn on the beast and hit F8 for boot popup
- select floppy
- run bios update
- restart
- check if it boots - if not open window and throw it out
- install remaining DDRs, the A8V seems to be quite picky about the RAM, especially with double sided DDRs.

Check it and send me a mail please.

Update on my 2nd RMA. I received a replaced A8V Deluxe board which happened to come with the dreaded Bios Version 1008 >< I tested it out of the box with the Athlon 64 3500+ CPU, memory and video card and I still get the "System Failed CPU Test" error prompt ... hopefully this board only needs to have the Bios chip replaced/reflashed (again!!!!) .....

Okay, first off, let me say something. DONT tell me about clearing the BIOS or putting the ram in slot B1, that doesnt work.

Ive got a client whom I personally built 2 identical machines for (with exception of CPU). Asus A8V-Delux with 1GB DDR 400, 250GB SATA, and a Radeon 9800 pro (saphire if i remember correctly). Difference between the machines was the case, power supply, and CPU. Both chips are winchesters (i've even talked to amd)

One machine which i built has a combo of an AMD 64 3000 and a 330 watt antec solution series PSU.
The other is a combo of an AMD 64 3500 with an antec 550 truepower (after going through 2 PSU's cause he kept buying the cheap ass ones).

Stupidly enough, the AMD 3000 on a 330watt power supply with a radeon 9800 pro has funtioned perfectly from its initial construction.

The AMD 3500 is giving the usual bulls**t about "cpu failed system test" and "cpu failed overclocking". It is receiving 2x the power of the 3000 chip. I had someone tell me to try a radeon 9600, so I did, and whoopdeedooo! it works fine, for about 3 reboots. Then it was back to its usual tricks. So more snooping and i've repeated these steps constantly (just short of throwing the board in the trash)

Well the client has finally just accepted the "cpu failed" crap and we've managed to get past that, just by hitting the reset button (that simple). This works great, however I'm not going to let Asus get away with that crap.

Now for another issue. This same AMD 64 3500+ will function all day long without a hitch! Until the client decides he wants to play Final Fantasy XI online. Only with this game does it manage to autoreboot itself. No BOSD occurs, no dump files. Just hard reset. memtest.org's tester runs clean. Forced underclocked the cpu, still does it. He tell's me he's updated the video card drivers and chipset. this is the only game that crashes. Im about ready to tell him to go buy a freakin PS2. I have not had the opportunity to try this out on the other AMD 64 3000, nor is that machine in his possesion (brother-in-law took it back to new york) for me to even try it.

Is anyone else having these same problems with this combo (or even the FFXI alone)?

I have googled, dogpiled, searched, scraped, all with nothing. I'm left with replacing a board that I personally cannot afford to replace and my client sure wont replace it on his dime. Had i known any of them when i built the machines I would have gone with the nForce chipsets from Abit, whom I trust more now than ever (The king is dead, BX6-R2! < 8 great years of loyal service > )

I've stopped buying asus after an encouter last month of refitting 4 machines with P4-2.4GHz (800's) and an asus motherboard. All of them the onboard audio controllers fail to operate, or worked fine and then magically shut themselves off. Although this is not mission critical for the business that was operating them, it tells me that if I need a bios update and an OS reinstall to fix this issue (which it didnt fix BTW), then SOMEONE has some SERIOUS quality control issues. I think its time that all of us who bought this mobo, stand up and say to asus, "You built a bad board!". And keep RMA'ing their product until they give you a different model.

So, after reading my vented rage, anyone, any other ideas other than replacement?

Last but not least, if anybody seems to be having the "System Failed CPU Test" error; you might have to look into RMA'ing the motherboard because it might be faulty. I for one, got the A8V Deluxe/A64 3400+ combo from TigerDirect in February. Guess what? It didn't work. RMA'ed the mobo got the same back with same bios version (1008) and I still had the same problem. I bought an Enermax 485 Pwr Supply thinking that I didn't have sufficient juice because case came with generic 450W Power Supply. Still same problem. Switched to A64 3500+ CPU and same problem. Next, I had my Bios Version 1008 chip reflashed to most recent one (Bios 1009) and still got the same problem. Two and a half months later going back and forth and I'm still having the same problem ... so I'll have to 2nd RMA the motherboard with the reflashed Bios chip so I can get a working one. Talk about overkill ><

ASUS A8V Deluxe Rev 2.00
Bios1009
A64 3500+ Winchester CPU
Enermax Noisetaker 485 W Power Supply
2 x 512mb Corsair TwinX 3200
2 Nec 16xDVD+/- RW
Audigy 2Z Sound Card
