I had the same problem, but none of the fixes worked. I then upgraded to WMP11 and still the same problem. Then I fixed it:
Put in CD,
open WMP,
click on "Now Playing" on menu bar
then go down drop down menu and select Play ' Name of Album (D',
go to left side of WMP and on bottom of list is "Name of Album Playing",
Right click this and select properties, Select "Digital", then OK, play CD - enjoy Sound.

In WMP 10 there is a small button at the lower right of the full screen view.

This button resembles an arrow pointing down and to the right and is for minimized view.
Clicking it changes the WMP view to an 'encapsulated' appearance and WALLA, the sound is on!

Pressing the 'full screen view' button returns everything to 'normal', with sound and view.

...Sadly this must be repeated, every time a new song/clip/whatever is played...

The sound is NOT retained for good.

Does anyone have a solution that will make this process unnecessary?

Wow this thread just keeps getting funnier.

In my opinion the Mute button in WMP10 is clearly labeled and when its on mute it shows the widely adapted mute symbol. I cant believe so many people had this same problem.

You're auto-censoring a perfectly legitimate non-obscene words like c.ockpit now?

I guess it's because the word c**kpit contains the letters c, o, c, and k. I'll be sure to set it to bypass the filter as soon as possible.

I had a recent similar problem for the first time ever. And no, it wasn't a (LMAO) 'mute' button c**kpit problem (DublinGunner, I really enjoyed the 'not plugged in' comment...all too true).

None of my audio-producing apps would produce sound...even the simplest of .wav players. I verified drivers, checked audio properties, checked volume control (for all playback types), etc.

What finally 'fixed' the thing (after about 30mins of screwing around), was simply using the 'HRTF Demo' in the Sound Manager, as part of the AC97 Audio Configuration. For some reason, simply using that one option 'reset' my audio. There's absolutely no reason to expect this would fix the problem, yet it did. One of the bizarre wonders of Windows.

XP Pro:
Start>>Settings>>ControlPanel>>SoundEffectManager>>HRTFdemo

edited to include this:
You're auto-censoring a perfectly legitimate non-obscene words like c.ockpit now?

Also, I had tried the 'Speaker Test' tab just prior to using the 'HRTF Demo' (in the same app) and the audio still wasn't working at that point in time.

edit to provide complete 'path' to HRTFdemo

Jesus wept, i've had this sound problem for ages. Cannot believe microsoft noobs!!! Why would anyone automatically leave it muted and not tell you? Even when you hovver over it nothing, I honestly didn't even think that it was this, it couldn't be so easy, well as you know it was that. And I class myself as someone who can sort any windows problem out. Who are they paying to write these programmes and who are they paying to check them, monkeys????

LMFAO I was about to ask about the mute button!

Also, I have just solved another problem that I have had with Windows Media 10, if anyone's interested. If your MSN messenger ever stops putting your "What's Playing" info in your message, you should open your WMP and click on tools, then options, then the plugins tab. Make sure that the MSN Messenger one has a check mark in it. Problem solved!
