With that said, I'm skeptical about it being under warranty anymore... If memory serves, Seagate only had a 3 year warranty on these older drives... Their new ones are 5 year. But, it couldn't hurt to check and see if your drive is still covered by Seagate (<a class="ext" href="/action/r/http://www.seagate.com" target="_blank">http://www.seagate.com</a> ... you'll also need the serial number off the sticker on the drive)<br /> <br /> Otherwise, the issues I'd check are:<br /> <br /> 1) is the underside of the drive making contact with the case? Some (most) models of HD have an exposed circuitboard underneath, and a short _may_ be caused by a piece of metal making contact with some leads on the board<br /> <br /> 2) have you tried a different molex (4-pin power) plug? the one you were using previously might have developed a short in it<br /> <br /> 3) was the computer recently moved? fell over? banged? kicked?... Were there other symptoms cropping up before this? Was the drive starting to sound loud?<br /> <br /> 4) have you tried a different hard drive in the computer? Hard drives take a substantial amount of power draw when the system starts up... if the computer shuts off or power cycles with _any_ hard drive plugged in, the problem might be with the power supply of your computer.
