the truth is only a google away!!

THEY AREN'T GOING TO USE X86 COMPATIBLE PROCS!

does the release say anything about x86? No.

Intel makes more then just x86

They won't be using IA64 either but intel makes chips based on that too. (Itanium)

http://www.linspire.com/lindows_michaelsminutes.php
Quote: Future "Mactel" computers will have specially designated Intel chips, not generic x86 compatible chips found in common PCs.

I think the only thing true here is now not even apple will be able to have an "apples to apples" comparison, as the two chips, and bus protocals will be different. A new but equally closed standard.

why jobs didn't hint more at this shows he just wants attention like some pathetic little girl who's been ignored by her father all her life wants boys.
- M$ dominance shaken? hardly...
- Do you think any Apple OS (or all of them, counting as one) has/shall have any larger share than any *nix systems? hm...
- Also, I'm not sure if going x86 means that all x86-compatible PCI/AGP/PCIe/whatever components will be compatible with Apple. But I may be mistaken.

Very interesting..... so this is how i see it...

Intel makes cpus for PCs
Intel makes cpus for Apple
Windows can run on Apple!!!!!
Tiger X will run on Intel platforms
End users will have a choice of 2 OSs to install
Microsoft will have a serious threat to Windows
AMD will continue to make better cpus than Intel, but Intel has a greater market share
(AMD X2 64s seems to be faster in games and some apps than Intels dual core 800 series)
IBM continue to make cell processors for games consoles

Overtime will people switch over to tiger x?
Perhaps

Microsoft dominance?
shaken

The real winners in this market change?
Intel

IBM Cell processors to take over Intels x86?
who knows....

Apple goes to back to IBM for cell processors?
lol

Thermalfreak: I see you got the idea

Will Olson II: You are right. However, any reasonlable company (I think Apple is included in this) supports "obsolete" products for a couple of, or say, at least 2 years.
[OFF]if it matters, buy stuff with 3-year-warranty (24h on-scene) and you'll eventually get the very same stuff. My HP P4 is just out of this 3-year this January, and they managed to replace the 20G hdd to a 40G-firmware-downgraded-to-20G in last December, when the smallest hdd on the market was some 60G or such. It didn't matter that the 1.6GHz 423-pin(!) CPU got suspicious and they brought a spare part for that too. Not mentioning SDRAM board etc [/OFF]
By the end of the 2nd (3rd) year, either it won't matter (since if it's still working, then it'll probably work another 2-3 years) or you'll replace it anyway.
I doubt it, as Apple isn't going to make the move with any of the existing Pentium D's or Pentium 4's. The first transitions are going to be when Yonah is released, followed by the "Merom" series of chips in late 2006 or early 2007.

It would have been a mighty move for Apple had they chosen to go for AMD. Since AMD are only a fraction of the size of Intel they might not had the capacity to supply all those CPUs for the new Apples.

The most interesting thing is not the move to Intel but to x86. Is there a new OSX coming out to support AMD64 CPUs or are they going to be 32bit.

In life, "The Devil or God, is in the Details", depends on circumstances doesn't it.

Intel has been a sleepy Over-Cat and AMD has been the much whipped UnderDog. Then AMD, who has always had the demand on itself to be lean and mean while living the FatCats shadow, sees a way to pool its resources and in a timely manner take advantage, as it always had/has of tweaking x86 designs to get more out of them than the faltering, big feline. It brings a 64-bit architecture to market that does everything better than the Puss-Cat from Pentium-Ville. In fact they do it so well, that There is very little room for royalty-free, unlicensed hardware developement for the Over-Cat! Oh my goodness, the shoe after nearly 20 years, is on the other foot: Intel may have to license technology from the firm they have tried to destroy just so they can make a decent 64-bit, thermally safe, reasonablly sized, power-sipping, processor - talk about coming-full-circle! (This is why I name all my female dogs PAYBACK!)

THEN along comes Sweet Apple pie, a saviour for beleaguered and often maligned kitty-kat Goliath Intel. Here is fresh meat, new horizons and a better OS than Microsoft has, even on their expensive drawing boards back in Redmond all the way into the 24th century (I lways wanted to see an episode of Star Trek or Voyager or any other futuristic Sci-Fi show that had a big Apple logo on those massive Bridge consoles and MFDs - but alas!) Apple in act is allowing Intel to not only get out from under Bill 'anti-trust-or-bust' Gates but also gain a better OS, build a processor that supports a better OS with hardware features AMD would not have pwnership of because AMD never supported anything Apple, and allow both companies to grow where all tyhey had to really do was steal Linux's thunder and pass Billy Bob Gates by driving on the banked, concrete and asphalt, autobahn-sized, shoulders of the PC superhighway.
And yes, I am going to buy all the G-5s I can get until they the switch because I am running Linux and NetBSD on the suckers for the next 30 years because I will have a powerful set of OS's on that hardware, doing fun stuff and just like ALL THOSE PCS IN THE WORLD, grow old gracefully but continue without all their unGodly worms, viruses, trojans, germs, bacteria, rot, funk,...ummm I think that is it until ebola can get into the darn things.
You go Steve, you go Intel, you got me when you said, " We are switching,..."

AMD will still smoke Intel!

By the way, no one is mentioning the fact that the IBM PowerPC chip is 64-bit architecture & that Intel has yet to prove itself in the 64-bit market. So, no matter who makes the computer it will still be inferior to anything AMD has on the market. Maybe Crapple and Intel or both signing their swan song, and this move by Crapple will work in Microsoft's and AMD's favor!

Im not talking obsolete in the sense that it wont be the newest and fastest. It will be obsolete in the sense that they will no longer be making software and such for it and supporting it because everything will be under a new arcitecture with a new API. It will be LITERLY OBSOLTE. Just like Apples change from Motorola CPUs to the PowerPC in the 90s.

Apple is strategicly positioning themselfs to take on microsoft in the OS market. think about it. 95% (guess) of the computers in the world are x86 platform if you whant to make an os and make a profit it would be wise to make it for the x86. the true sing that this is what they are intending to do will come when the artecture is finished and it uses the same addressing schemes as pcs. Microsoft gets $250.00 for each copyof XP professinal that sells. Hell I want a piece of that market too.
