Different than my problem, I was only freezing for a quarter second or so (but as i do music, that's enough to make the computer useless.)

Your problem sounds like not enough memory in your video card / and or not a fast enough AGP bus speed of your video card... so your game is "texture thrashing" - runs out of texture memory on the card and has to swap it out to Windows memory. Just a guess.

I'm getting a similar problem playing Half-Life 2 on this machine (with a 4X NVidia GFTi4600 128 MB ) - plays great for 20 minutes or so, then freezes up (while audio gets stuck in an annoying loop) for entire minutes at a time... then it gets better again for a while. And so on.... Time to get a new 8X card i think!

May be related - I have a GA-7N400 Pro 2. Freezes on all my RPG's every 2.5 minutes for 8 seconds, the hard disk chugs and then it carries on till the next time. I've changed drivers, sound card and ethernet hardware. I shall try moving the disk. Im not using RAID.

I just got done rebuilting my system that has an 8INXP board in it and I ran into the same issue.

I have two 200GB ATA133 Maxtor drives but am not using the Promise RAID functions but rather the basic ATA133 functions. This system worked perfectly before I rebuilt it the other day so I new that it issue had to be driver related. I always download the latest drivers from the manufactures website and this time that was the problem. http://www.giga-byte.com has the 2.00.1020.41 drivers and http://www.gigabyte.com.tw has the 2.00.1020.32 drivers. I downloaded the x.41 drivers from the US site and that was the problem.

To fix this issue you don't need to move your drives to the ATA100 controller just use the x.32 drivers from the following link.

http://ftp.gigabyte.com.tw/support/d_other.htm#promise276

People, the topic of this thread is this particular motherboard. No point recommending others or advertising your website here.

It's my understanding that there is a BIOS upgrade for the Promise RAID controller, that should fix the mouse hiccups. It may not be available from Gigabyte however, you might have to get it from Promise.

Sorry, but i don't have any further info on this as i moved my 2 hard drives off the RAID and haven't had a reason yet to use it since. It might come up again someday and if i learn anything, i'll post it here.

I still have my stuck during reboot problems with that machine as well. It's been a while since i looked for a BIOS upgrade, i'll check again soon and see if they have anything new.
Like i say above, suspect are the onboard gigabit ethernet driver, and the Promise RAID driver.

I fixed my mouse-freezes by moving the boot drive off the Promise.

I fixed some difficulty with low latency USB audio (using an Edirol UA5) by disabling the onboard ethernet. Most people wouldn't notice this problem however.

Good luck.

I use Win2000 by the way. Wouldn't Recommend 98 at this point.
I have two machines with this board, 2.53 PIVs, originally with 1 Gb of PC2100, now 256 Mb on dealers advice. Both constantly and erraticaly stalling, requiring reboots. I tried everything, until... Saturday, in desperation, I fdisked a boot drive and reinstalled Windows 98 SE. What I then did not do was install any drivers from the supplied disk! Surprise, surprise, total stability!.

This drive is currently running on an ATA/100 socket. I plan to clone it using Drive Copy before attempting to switch it to a Raid socket running as ATA.
Unless anyone has any bright ideas, I plan to install the AC97sound driver next. What I attempt next? Well I'll watch this space.

Thanks for the tip on the Promise RAID drivers...i'll look for new ones.

That controller has been working fine for me since i took the boot drive off it. It is supporting another drive that works just fine...only seem to get this freezing issue when it's the C: drive.

One other issue with that board that i mention in another thread is, I also had to disable the onboard gigabit ethernet controller to get my USB audio (i use an Edirol UA-5 for making music) to work smoothly. I disalked it in the BIOS and replaced it with a 100Mbit ethernet card and all's fine now. (Unless you're doing music or other realtime intensive applications, you probably wouldn't notice this problem.)

Once i made these two changes i haven't had a complaint about the board since. I have done one BIOS upgrade at this point as well - don't know if it fixed either of these issues as my setup is still the same.

I have the same problem with my GA-8INXP. Write Combining is disabled and the AGP speed is set to 4x @ my hercules radeon 9700.

the mouse freezes at the startup, by pulling the ps2 out and in the problem is solved, but there are still some strange system restarts while playing games or benchmarking.

i have installed the newest catalyst drivers and im using a WD800BB as Bootdrive @ IDE 1

I just found out that in my case (Asus a7v + promise Ultra100) the problem was solved by using older promise drivers (1.60 b33) instead of the newest. My problem was a lag (in mouse movement and video display) when accessing my hard drive.
