hi vikki,

short of time right now, but read through the whole thread, there are instructions there as to how to get it up and running. you obviously have access to another computer so i suggest you make the ubcd4win cd that i mentioned and just follow the advice that was posted earlier.
Okay, here's my situation now - I have my computer booted up with the UBCD4win and all my data is available on my C: hard drive. But I can't seem to connect to my home network. When I go to My Network Places, Entire Network, Microsoft Windows Network, Home (the name of my network) all three of my computers appear (including the one booted with the UBCD4win). When I click on the networked computers I get the access denied message. I think I don't have everything configured just right, but the interface is just different enough that I can't figure out how to configure the network.

When I try to access the problem computer on the network from either of the alternate systems, it shows up on the "View Workgroup Computers" but when you click on it you get that Microsoft Passport network blue sign on screen. I'm not sure what to do with that.

Anyone familiar with the UBCD4win interface?

I'm hoping to copy my documents etc to an external hard drive connected to one of the networked computers.

Thanks - any help is appreciated -

hey kris,

once you get that sucker up and running again, with all those changes you may find that your user accounts will be gone, software won't work etc...to counteract this go back into the system32/config directory with bartpe ubcd so that the system is not requiring the hdd to operate and with one of the file utilities rename the software sam security and defaut files to say softwarezzz or something one at a time then go into the tmp directory that you made and copy each one of them back one by one (has to be the corresponding one of course) and remove the bak extension. then reboot each time you do this evrything starts coming back yay. i even found my system file came back and was all good when i did this.....big up ya microsoft. however if you are only after your data, then copy it out and do a fresh install, once you have everything exactly how you want it, use drvimagerxp and image that c partition. if it screws up again you can just reimage it using the bartpe cd (provided you have included drvimagerxp (http://www.woundedmoon.org/UBCD/UBCD.html) and the image from your BACKUP partition. once you do that though make sure you backup your emails and bookmarks separately so you get a fresh install and then reload your emails and bookmarks - speaking from experience i thought i was smart getting drvimager xp and the bartpe ubcd from woundedmoon then after another stuff up i reimaged thinking haha i got you now you sucker but ....no recent emails and all the changes i had made to my bookmarks were gone (grrrrrrr). good luck!!

I had a problem with my HP computer once, I had to call them to obtain the actual windows xp disks, im pretty sure that the cd you have is just for the drivers. Contact Dell and get the full recovery disks for your machine, but if you do that it will be a complete wipe of your HD. It will restore your computer to exactly how it was when you first bought it. When I received my recovery disks they gave me like 10 disks total.

Hi Kris. Have you tried to run the system restore feature from a command prompt. you can get into it from the Bart PE CD. I can't remember exactly (I'm not at home where my bart is) but I think you can get into the task manager. Hit file, new task, and the run window will open. Type in c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and the system restore app should open (hopefully.) and you can try to restore to an earlier date. Also if you can get into the run app, type in sfc /scannow and run the system file checker. That will replace or repair any damaged or corrupted system files. The other thing you can do is put the hard drive on another system as a slave. If you can do that and see your data post back and I'll help you get into your files if the permissions are denied in the my docs folder etc.

Help with similiar problem missing file \windows\system32\config\system

Hello all,
I've been researching this topic on this board for a couple days now but can't find the answer to my particular situation. My laptop wouldn't boot out of the clear blue a couple days ago, hangs on the microsoft logo at startup, I attempted safe mode start, last good config start - always hangs.

Interjection - I'm using an HP pavilion ze 5200 (P4, 1.7 G, 60 gb HD, 512 MB, cd-rw, DVD, mcafee AV, regular user of spybot and adaware) medium/advanced skills

So using my HP Operating System CD (Microsoft Windows XP Home SP1) and instructions from http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307545 and http://www.digitalwebcast.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=8658-0 I entered Recovery Console and made the following file changes per the instructions -

md tmp
copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bak

delete c:\windows\system32\config\system
delete c:\windows\system32\config\software
delete c:\windows\system32\config\sam
delete c:\windows\system32\config\security
delete c:\windows\system32\config\default

copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config\software
copy c:\windows\repair\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam
copy c:\windows\repair\security c:\windows\system32\config\security
copy c:\windows\repair\default c:\windows\system32\config\default

All were implemented except the line copyc:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system which returned file not found.

So now upon exit the system reboots and of course I get the
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\windows\system32\config\system

I want to get back into my system without performing a clean install so I can back up files to an external HD before I lose anything. Shame on me, I hadn't backed up recently. I'm making a BartPE / UBCD4win, but will that help me in this situation?

BartPE is pretty cool. It can get you into the system for some limited functionality, but not always. A couple weeks ago I had the BSOD flash before restart blues. It was too fast to read, before it rebooted. I could get to the safe mode/safemode w/command prompt screen but any choice merely restarted the loop. Bart got me to the command prompt, but that didn't work either. I never did figure out what was wrong. And being about 2 weeks behind on my backups, my only option was to slap in my trusty 8GB HD already loaded for this system, gain possession of my documents folder and favorites, move them to the d partition and delete and reinstall on C. I also have a boot CD that didn't work either. When the computer gods are angered, they just won't listen to reason some times. <g>

Hi Oliver
I've used the ubcd with bartpe & in the cases which involve chkdsk it matters not, boot tools rely on the OS having files in specific locations. When chkdsk/r runs it moves & renames folders & files making any boot method null & void. If for example the system32 folder is renamed & moved to the root directory as happens when you get NTOSKRNL is corrupt or missing, no boot method will fix this. Ubcd can't even access the OS partition of a HD when this happens & your left with only two options. One, reformat & re-install your OS or two, create a image (ghost) of your OS partition, then use a image editing program such as ghost explorer to extra the found.000 directory & manually rename the dir0000.chk files & folders contained within, then you create a new image with the newly renamed files & folders along with the balance of files from the image & restore it.

This is only when chkdsk/r has messed things up which happens often, it was just my second option & not what I think JOHN's problem is at the moment. Granted ubcd can boot up but it can't see anything in the chldsk situation, at least nothing on the OS partition. This is why none of the MS recovery methods work either, the references in the MFT are there but they point to non-existant files & folders.
sorry brian, i have to disagree the ubcd built with bartpe will boot the pc without touching the hard disk. from there you can access the diagnostic and recovery tools on the cd which will then access the hdd...hop over to
In tom woodward's case overclocking the RAM caused the problem but I doubt RAM is a factor in your case, more likely a bad shutdown.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=822705

There's also one other possible reason, if chkdsk has run there's a chance it's overwrote some folders making the OS impossible to boot. This makes recovery console useless & any other boot methods including Bart's PE builder.

The problem with chkdsk/r is it creates a new folder called "found.000" on the root directory, then places all the corrupt files & folders inside, renaming each as there added, dir0000.chk dir0001.chk & so on. chkdsk can & does rename entire folders including the system32 folder, all the files are intact inside the newly renamed system32 folder, but the problem is it's renamed & moved to the root directory making it impossible to boot your OS by any method.
