I realize this thread is over 2 years old, however I just got a Dell XPS Studio (Jan 30 2008) with Realtek audio and I am experiencing the exact same popping as described earlier in this thread. It sounds almost exactly like an old LP popping when we used to have albums and 45's playing on a turntable.

My system is the latest out there, I just got it less than a week ago and I was really p**sed when I heard all this noise coming over both my speaker system and headphones. So even with the Vista 64 bit operating system that I have this problem still happens.

I also have a 9 month old Inspiron laptop with Realtek onboard sound installed and it even does the same thing. Popping and crackle .......

Ah, and here I am ... another user with the same general problem.

I'm running an HP ZD7000A with Conexant AMC Audio and what-not.

When I unplug my power source and run the box on batteries ... the static noise dissappears COMPLETELY.

Would this suggest that the root cause is, in fact, my power supply?

This isn't really a solution to the original poster's problem, but it maybe useful to others who are having problems with excessive noise.

I have a system about three years old and quite suddenly had stability issues and lots of noise. I was suprised to find that dusting and rebuilding the system completely pretty much cleared up all the problems, including the noise. So if you're running an older system and begin having issues with noise, try giving it a dust out.

Hi guys,

I have just solved my popping/clicking problem ...

SETUP:
RS400-A Intel chip based Pentium Motherboard
CPU Pentium P4 2.8Ghz
AC'97 onboard audio (only)

PROBLEM:
I had the odd pop/click come through the speakers while playing some housey tunes ... basically playing with Acid or Reason gave the same results (i.e any audio basically) ... it really wound me up ... it wasn't continuous ... it popped randomly at intervals of a few seconds ...

SOLUTION:
I just went and got the latest drivers (June 2006) from download.com (see below) and installed them ... I couldn't find these on Realtek's site though ...

Now there's NOT a pop or click heard anymore ... so it WAS the drivers like someone said above ...

DRIVER SITE (for A.3.91 Drivers):
http://www.download.com/Realtek-AC-97-WDM-Driver-Windows-98-Me...68908.html

DRIVER SPECS:
When installed they update the AC'97 chipset to the following:

Driver Provider: Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
Driver Date: 22/07/2006
Driver Version: 5.10.0.6150 (alot newer than the older 5.10.0.5870 I previously had)

Hope this helps ...

cheers,
Gem
I tried Simon Ehrlich's advice about muting the PC speaker and it instantly made a differance.
I can _barely_ hear a _very_ faint humming in the background, but I have super hearing anyway :]

I am going to try mute everything not needed, but the PC speaker was the main villan for me, thanks!

Hey they are right. Mute the PC Speaker. I wrote a new driver to fix the problem automatically. Here is the download:

http://houseofbugs.homeip.net/Nvidia_Realtek_Audio_Drv_Fixed.rar

You have to manually install the driver using the device manager.
Simon has it right:

This issue seemed to start for me after a BIOS upgrade.

Windows XP: Open volume control>Options>properties>show "PC Speaker" control> go and mute the PC speaker.

I was having major interference and this worked 100% for me.

Removing parts from a PC fixes problems?

BAWHAHA I was having the same problem, after reading all the troubleshooting i found one that hit the spot, muting the line in/aux/mic. what i found was muting PC speaker (as noted in the post) lowered the feedback by alot but ripping the speaker out of the case fixed it real good. (evil laugh) that noise was almost driving me to the brink of insanity so to no suprise i ripped that sucker out and threw it outside, stomped on it and kicked it down the street.

It's your powersupply. The ASUS A8N-SLI series of motherboards have issues upon issues with Antec powersupplies, and seeming as your powersupply is from Antec I suggest you grab a completely different powersupply as I believe this will cure your problems.

I've experienced exactly the same problem with my Asus A8N32-SLI motherboard - i am using headphones and i was hearing noises in the right channel and when i was encreasing the volume some poping appeared on each step in the left channel. There were also other funny 'sound effects' when using the mouse buttons, on hdd activity and etc. I tried a lot things to fix that , beginning with change of different drivers , i disabled every onboard device which i can disable from the bios - lan, usb, raid.... all of them but nothing seemed to fix this problems. The solution came from muting some of the volume controls. When i mute "Line in" the noise from the right channel moves to the left and when i encrese or decrease the volume the popping effect in the left is lowered and it is almost unnoticeable but the noise from the right is now several times encreased in the left channel. Next thing is to mute "PC Speaker" control - now the noise is almost gone , there is absolutely no volume 'popping' effect but still able to hear some sound from the mouse in the right channel when left clicking. Step 3 - mute "Microphone" - a few times lowered level of the noise and finally mute "AUX" - now the noise in the left is almost unhearable and no mouse clicking sound in the right.

Ok so I have been through several forums, and before trying much else, I just fixed my problem. I am running off the onboard sound on my A8N32-sli, and had the same feedback, and interference at higher volumes. I was able to hear noise prodused from the hard drive, and while doing anything with the mouse.

Anyway, I just went in the volume controls, and went into the properties for playback, and selected every option , like Side, Subwoofer, Front, Rear, Aux, Phoneline, and PC Speaker. Muting PC Speaker seemed to fix my problem, or atleast hide it, also muting Aux,and Line-In, seemed to make a very slight fuzz noise go away.

hope this works for you guys

I unplugged the speakers, hooked up a set of headphones and the static is still there.

Moved the power cord for the speakers to a new outlet... same problem.

Monitor is LCD and sits 3 ft away from tower.

Never had the issue when i had a via chipset on my old K8v-Se deluxe system, but no biggie I was going to get a new Sound Card eventually so I could hook up my Yamaha Studio Monitors.

The only thing that sucks is I am in the middle of writing a score to a Mini DV horror film I have been shooting since summer 05, and trying to do ADR, and score the film makes it a pain in the a$$.

I am glad there is a community like this where people get together to help someone out. Thanks for all the advice. I am gonna buy a new sound card if that doesn't fix it I am gonna pack up the motherboard and exchange for a new one.
