Ok, I've got it,
There's only one screw but it's well hidden
1. At the back of the laptop remove the three screws on the support posts for the screen
2. Open the laptop fully and lift the plastic panel that has the power button.
3. Remove the 2 screws holding the keyboard in place
4. Carefully slide the keyboard towards the monitor and lift.
5. To the left of the keyboard ribbon cable is the screw that's been causing all this grief.
6. Remove, slide out optical drive, reassemble.

Now, having done all that can anyone recommend a compatible DVD RW drive as mine has crapped out
I called Acer today and they said I've to remove the HD before I can remove the DVD-drive.
They said there is a screw under the HD that I've to unscrew, then just push the DVD-drive out.

However, there was no screw under the HD..

This remains a mystery.

Thanks Jim for the fast reply!
Step 1 looks to be the toughest to me. Do you mean the half inch side plate and how do I remove it? Or do you possibly mean the large bottom plate with approx. 20 screws?
Thanks again,
here's what to do:

1) remove the side panels from your case.
2) disconnect the drive cables from the back of the old drive.
3) remove the mounting screws holding the drive in place.
4) remove the old drive.
5) look at the jumper setting on the back of the old drive to determine if it is master
or slave.
6) make sure that the new drive's jumper settings match that of the old drive.
7) insert the new drive into the bay that the old drive came out of.
8) replace the mounting screws to secure the new drive in place.
9) attach the drive cables to the new drive.
10) put the side panels back on your case.
11) boot the computer and confirm that windows recognizes the new drive.

Hello all,

Any experience on replacing DVD drive on Acer Aspire 3000? Our one got a little hit with ground and the drive slightly out with the result that that the drive is not connected any more. The usual switches for ejecting hardware are missing and removing some screws around didn't help. Do I need to remove the whole back plate or is there a simple way?
