64bit will defentily enhance performance if you use an app that can take advantage of it. it basically can process twice the number of commands in the same clock cycle. as already mentioned in a low perfoming app you won't see much of a diffrenece but on high demand apps you will. xp pro x64 has been out a while and vista will only come with the 32bit version because of MS's promise of backwards compatability.
why vista beta x64 might be slower or the same:
1. it's a beta
2. it might not be configured correctly
3. many apps do not have support for x64, will still run but as x32

if you open the task manager in xp pro x64, it will tell you which app is run as x64 and x32
try it in vista
isn't that a 64bit XP version you're referring to? Why not just forget about Vista for a couple years and run 64Bit XP if you have 64Bit processors?

Any program extensively using 64-bit variables will see benefits from a 64-bit processor running a 64-bit OS. These variables include:
-signed and unsigned quads (aka uInt64, Int64, and Long in .NET Framework)
-doubles

The only way you'll see a serious performance boost is if the program runs over two billion 64-bit operations a second. In this scenario, a 64-bit machine would get through it at least twice as fast as a 32-bit machine. Ten-twenty years from now, when 64-bit variables are essential and 128-bit is being implemented, the difference between 32-bit and 64-bit will be clear. Right now, we are in a transition from 32-bit to 64-bit meaning 64-bit is merely supported, not exploited. This is identical to what happened back in the mid 90's with 16-bit to 32-bit.

16 exabytes sound like a lot now but it's just a matter of time before we develop a loop around that out of necessity. In any case, I'm sticking with XP x64/MCE and s939 for the time being.

In regards to Vista, it is still Beta. A lot of those added features were probably removed due to focus group opinions and the like.

I would imagine, though, that the performance gained by 64-bit technology on the enterprise end would be due to the added amounts of memory.

Sure, for some applications, like massive databases. But for other applications, the problem is that you're trying to work with numbers that are too big or too precise to stuff into a 32-bit word (ie a common data type in programming languages is "double" = double-precising floating point number). A 64-bit processor (or processor with 64-bit extensions, if you prefer...) can handle adding two 64-bit words in one instruction, for example, while this just ain't possible in traditional 32-bit land. This is a fairly gross oversimplification, but bottom line, there are reasons 64-bit will speed things up, but you (in the general sense...myself included) probably won't care

64 bit can certainly improve performance, if you're working with large or high precision numbers (ie simulations, heavy duty calculations, etc). But as Pickle says, for average users, the only likely benefit is addressing obscene amounts of memory.

It really should give us better performance.
But, I guess considering that 64bit is the address bus, I believe the only time we'll see increased performance is with the higher-end, more demanding stuff.

64-bit really isn't a performance-enhancing technology, but rather it allows the use of huge amounts of memory (up to 16 exabytes, I think) natively. Current 32-bit systems require the use of "tricks" like Physical Address Extension to stuff a lot of RAM (4 GB +) into a computer resulting in something of a performance detriment. With 64-bit extensions, you can have more than 4 GB of RAM without that detriment.
