But for other applications, the problem is that you're trying to work with numbers that are too big or too precise to stuff into a 32-bit word (ie a common data type in programming languages is &quot;double&quot; = double-precising floating point number). A 64-bit processor (or processor with 64-bit extensions, if you prefer...) can handle adding two 64-bit words in one instruction, for example, while this just ain't possible in traditional 32-bit land. Current 32-bit systems require the use of &quot;tricks&quot; like Physical Address Extension to stuff a lot of RAM (4 GB +) into a computer resulting in something of a performance detriment.
