Could it be that you accidentally checked "digital out" in PowerDVD's sound options but are connected to the analogue jack(s) of your sound card?

well the analogue audio cable dates back from when computers were not powerful enough to process all that data from a cd. so the is a decoder/dac in the optical drive unit which outputs the analogue signal to a soundcard for direct output. it isnt needed today because computers have progressed a lot since then. Some drives even have a digital output on the back which can connect to a digital input on a soundcard. then the soundcard processes all the data completly bypassing the cpu.
i've tried usnig the digital link with my aound blaster audigy and it works very effectively.
although this does not directly help the orginal poster. hmmm lets think
i would say try media player classic as already surgested, if that works then theres a problem with the dvd decoder software. if it doesnt then check all the volume control when you double click the volume icon in the system tray. if nothing else works try reinstalling your dvd player software. ie uninstall and then install.

I assumed that's what they're for because all of the computers I've seen that bother to plug them in have them. It is for digital to analog audio signal conversion, no doubt, but it doesn't make sense why it would be necessary. Special circumstances I suppose.

Hmm odd. I have them on my drive, which is new (well, less than 1 year old) and no front audio jack.

In fact, I specifically remember the front audio jack working WITHOUT those cables on an old machine, and I had to plug my speakers into it as I didnt have the internal cable...

Strange....

I went to Radio Shack (manager of a local store--brilliant lady I should add and very technical savvy) requesting those cables several years ago. They said they no longer carry them because they are unnecessary. I haven't used them since without a problem.

All that data flows through the PATA/SATA cables. If you want proof, unplug the cables and see if it still works.

No it doesnt.

My cd/dvd drive doesnt even have a headphone jack. It has both analogue & digital outputs for outputting sound to the sound card when playing directly form the drive.

Not sure how relevent it is for DVD's, but may as well check all possibilities

"There is an audio cable that must connect from the DVD drive to either the motherboard (for onboard sound) or your sound card."

That only applies to when you want to listen to the audio through the audio-out jack at the front of the optical drive. It sends the audio data to the audio device to be converted from digital to analog signal which is then returned to the device and routed to the audio jack. I believe that only works with audio CDs though (might be CDA only).

Can you play other DVD videos in the drive with audio? Are you certain this video does have audio? Do you have a software DVD Decoder installed? Does the DVD video you are attempting to play work fine in another DVD player?

Have you played a DVD movie in it before?

There is an audio cable that must connect from the DVD drive to either the motherboard (for onboard sound) or your sound card.

Do CD's play properly?

*edit

Also, double click on your sound icon in the system tray, and ensure CD balance & wave balance are NOT muted

if you get video then its not a hardware issue. ensure you havent muted anything.
i would try media player classic,

Hi,

I didn't have any issue with my DVD ROM until recently. I don't have any audio when I try to play a DVD movie, I am currently using Cyberlink PowerDVD, I also have Window Media and Real Player as well, but same thing happens. I got video, but no audio. When I tried to use the DVD to play DVD game, it works fine.

I am not sure if it's a hardware issue, I think it's something not linking to Windows XP properly, can some please help?

Thanks
