I received the same error, and I found a solution to it. I just took out the dvd and cleaned the drive by blowing on it and making sure no dust particles were on the drive and cleaned the cd thoroughly. When I inserted the dvd back in ...It worked "Wooooooooof" ....So clean the drive and then try burning it...
Hope It helps....
Thanks for the info. I have tried this before when using XP and as far as I remember there was no change but as it was some time ago I can't recall. One thing for sure it did no harm.

I have switched to Vista and the problem is solved but with the introduction of many other problems. Whoever said that the change to Vista was without problems has very little ecperience.

Incidently, the service mentoined in your reply does not seem to exist in Vista.

Thanks anyway for your efforts.

I had this same problem yesterday but unfortunately solved it the hard way . At the time my PC had 3 hard drives, the dvd burner and 2 fans running from 2 sets of molex connectors (3 per line). Unplugging the fans and giving the dvd burner its own dedicated power line solved it for me.

The solution in the previous posts could have saved me a lot of fiddling around though .

This is a nice site. I had the same problem with calibration errors
Let me give you the run down.I'm using a Hewlett Packard Pavilion 6746c with 256 mb
memory and processor runs about 733 mhz. I bought a new hp lightscribe DVD burner
and it worked fine. Then I downloaded DVD software update and when I installed it
It told me I needed to enable DMA on my computer so I told it to do it.Then my drive wouldn't burn afterwards. I checked the message box that Nero give me after failing to burn and it said "power calibration error". I found this website and Calvin's answer
worked on my computer. I use XP Professional and Nero 7 so if anyone with similar setup has this problem you might give it a try. I suppose it had something to do with enabling the DMA?

1 on desktop click start
2 select control panel
3 click on administrative tools
4 click on services
5 browse your way down to IMAPI CD BURNING COM SERVICE
6 right click (on IMAPI) then select properties
7 in the middle of the window it will say start up type.click on the arrow to the right and select disabled.
8 make sure you click APPLY

please leave any feedback here just to see if it worked for you or not

I've had to use an old pc recently while my others gone back for repair and i found i got the same problem with my old pc, using this guide enabled me to write DVDs instead of just CDs.

Sorry, I sent my message to the wrong person as I am new to this type of service advice. Sorry for any embarrassment I might have caused.

My original statement was:

I have had problems with the same issue. The burner burnt RW's but not ordinary disks which caused a lot of problems with an overseas programme I was working on and missed the boat. Fortunately a previously burnt RW was able to be sent.

I tried your advice regarding closing down the service and it worked. Thank you as you have saved me from having to buy another burner.

As a computer repairer, I am unsure why closing down this service worked and if I had used another brand of DVD would the trouble have occurred. Do you have any insight on these issues?

I have never subscribed to an advisory service such as yours before but will continue to do so.

Once again thanks for the great tip.
I have proplem with my CD/DVD+RW drive (Sony). When I have written DVD +RW Philips (data, media…) with Nero 5.5,that’s very good. But now, I couldn’t write the same DVD + RW Philips because “power cabliration error”. I re-installed driver DVD, flash new firmware, re-install WinXP but even I can’t write. My problem is only with DVD. For CD, it’s good.

And the last, I did with Calvin’s advice, clean my laser lense but I can’t write.

What I have to do, now?????????

Sorry about my English if I have fault
"woohoo success" Ok, so after reading forum after forum on this issue because i was suffering from the power calibration plague as well. My 32x10x40 never had a problum burning on low end media or high end for that matter. After updating this, and patching that, expensive media, software changes my issue got progressively worse until absolutely no burn no time, power calibration error every time. I re-installed my roxio 5, dismanteled my tdk burner and cleaned it with alcohol and q-tips, paying particular attention to the laser lense. After re-installing my burner I can again burn like madd "even on da cheap stuff". Moral? dust is no friend to the puter. Clean your laser lense.
From FAQ section on Nero website.

9. I get a 'Power calibration error' or 'Calibration area (almost) full' error message. Why?

Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.

Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC).
This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times.

If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (amost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder.

Please try the following solutions:

Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.
Try another brand of CD-R or CD-RW media.
Try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the error occurs with an external recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the external chassis and connect it internal.
Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.
Send the recorder in for service.

I have a LireOn SOHW-1633sx dvd-rw drive and i also recieve power callibration errors i have used both nero 6 and dvd deycrypter and still get the same old error. The compilation iam currently burning is 4GB and with nero and decrypter i get the error but interestingly enough if i try and burn say a 1GB compilation i have no probs. Iam using sub standard media but im just wondering why it works for some compilations and not for others....maybe the size could be part of it....i dont know???
This is something I got with my friends DVD burner. Its a TDK 440N Indi-dvd burner. Has absolutly no problem reading cds, reading dvds, no problem even burning cds, but it is unable to burn a dvd. I used to get the same power calibration error. I thought it might be a dirty lens or dust inside the burner, so I took it apart, looked at it cleaned the lens and put it back together. Now I just get a "burn failed" message when I try to burn a dvd. I have tried different media types including TDK which would definitly work b/c its a TDK burner. The dvd burner still reads cds and dvds and burns cds perfect, but cannot burn a dvd. The "burning failed" shows up(I'm using nero) after about 20 seconds into the burn process. Nothing is even written to the dvd, as I am able to reuse the dvd. What could be the problem? Ive also tried the burner in 3 different computers with nero 6. Same problem!

O yea BTW beside the TDK DVD-Rs ive used Memorex DVD-Rs. I would consider both of these brands good, and considering that memorex used to work in the burner. Idk what hapened. One day this problem just came up.
