i just downloaded this off Steam and it's running slow and jumpy for me and i'm still on the first level. Sound gets choppy too.

I've tried turning down the video and audio settings, but it's just bad.

My systems specs are:

Windows Vista (32bit)
AMD 64 x2 4400+
2GB RAM
8800 GTS (x2 SLi)
I am indeed using vista. Is that patch part of regular Windows updates? Because if so, I have it. Otherwise, could you post a link?

If so, you might wanna download the patches they released for gaming and the virtual address space usage

I'm not sure what a reading error off the hard-drive would entail, but my harddrive is about three months old, so it would be weird if it was failing so soon, wouldn't it?

It should be mentioned that I also tried every piece of advice I could find. Settings do not affect this lag, I've increased the pagefile to 10 gigabytes, patched and updated everything from the game itself to my video drivers and BIOS, and the behavior is still exactly the same.

I can play from the start without any lag. Around chapter 3, it begins to lag notably after about ten minutes of play, but it disappears if you save and reload the game. From there, it goes downhill, and the further into the game I get, the faster after reloading, it begins to lag, up until now where I have some 20 seconds before the lag makes the game unplayable.

Another thing to mention is that whenever I exit the game, it crashes on the way out, for some reason. Microsoft's suggested "solution" is to contact Valve, the makers of the source engine, but I've already been through all the suggestions on the steampowered.com support site...

This sounds like a reading error off the hard drive to me.

Obviously, all game system requirements are met...actually, check the box - make sure it doesn't say 30,000rpm HDD required :S
Just for the record, and in the hopes that someone with some know-how might figure something out, I'll state that I'm running this with a 8800 GTX 768MB, 4GB Ram and a 2,6 GhZ dual core processor, and I'm still getting lag to the point where it's flat-out unplayable. Around the time where you meet the spiders, specifically the large room where you have to climb around on the inside of a tower, it becomes so laggy that I constantly fall down because my character keeps moving a second or two after I stop going in a direction...

If you want a gaming system these days to run without choppyness you really need 2GB of system ram, I see he has 1GB and that means dipping into the pagefile (virtual memory) on hard disk for that real choppy feeling. Thus would explain why HL2 an older game, which needs less system memory, runs great on 1GB.

Funny you guys say 6600 is crap..back when Vanguard SOH first came out thats all I had, and my game ran smoother and had less problems than anyone with the higher end cards. What is it they say, its not the Size of the boat, its the motion of the ocean? (eg)

I specifically remember reading the highest game settings require a 512mb card. 6600 is a piece of crap BTW 128bit interface not worth putting more than 128mb-256mb on that card.

Yeah i read that too and you also need 2 gb of ram when you set the texture quality to the highest. But thats BS like in Doom 3 where you need a 512 mb card for ultra quality when my 8800 gts 320 mb + 1.5 gb ram has no problem running it smoothly plus 16xMSAA and 16xAF are enabled. Anyway, the highest texture quality in Dark Messiah has no difference at all compared to high and it is still crap looking plus it increases loading times. Btw i know the 6600 is crap, that was just a rhetoric question.
