I just called Sony at 1-800-488-7669, I gave them the model number of the computer and the sony part number off the power supply, the old part number is 1-468-851-21, the new part number is 1-468-851-24, this replaces the Delta Electronics DPS-400LB power supply that comes with the Sony VGC-RA710G, the 716G and the 718G series desktops, the price is $131.60 plus S&H, they were good at finding the part and sold to me over phone.
Having looked over the last week:

option 1: put all contents in new case with new power supply etc

option 2: wait a few months replace with own built computer with new mobo, processor etc

Thanks guys I had a quick look jus and I think it will help me source a power supply-I still haven't managed to get it out! SONY will not help me by email or phone call. "we dont support hardware? I'm seeing if some friends(experined in building pcs) can try and get it out over the weekend. Until then i'm stuck anyway? RA204 it's a solid build anyway! ;-)

I think John pretty much covered everything in that other thread. You should read through that. Even the little things like placement of the power button (or does it even have a power switch?) is the kinda stuff you should look into. I use to have a Dell that would have worked fine with an industry standard PSU, but I woulda had to cut the back panel metal out to fit a standard PSU in the space, because the Dell PSU had no power button.
I'm having the same problem Sony Vaio RA204 same power supply, bought x1950 xtx, the graphics card will fit but need to uprade power supply to power it. 1st problem I've come across is i cant get the old power supply out! I've unscrewed side screws, wiggled it but no joy. Does anyone know if i'm missing something? 2nd problem is finding a power supply the same dimensions 17x14x10.5 cm roughly measured with a ruler.
