It could be a bad CPU. I format & install Windows XP Pro 5 times a year. Just for the hell of it. It keeps your harddrive in super working order. It takes me about 35min to install, and that's including a full Format.
Call or e-mail AMD tech support. They will help you. Don't bother with Asus. Later.

I also have the asus a7n8x deluxe with barton 2500 and Crucial 512 mb pc2700 ddr ram. It takes about 8 hours to install XP and at least 2 minutes to boot into XP after its installed. I RMA'd the mobo and I received a call today that it works fine and they are sending it back to me. It was not tested with a barton 2500. I tried both 100 and 166 settings in the bios before sending it in, and it made no difference. Any suggestions? Is this an indication of a bad CPU?

I was wondering if any one out there could possible let me know how to change the cpu multiplier on a asus a7v8x-mx mobo if it is even possible at all! I tried to do it through the bios but it was all locked up! I'm pretty new to this I just built this system and after I got it all put together it said that I was running an amd 1100. Which I am not!! My system specs are asus a7v8x-mx mobo amd xp 2500+ windows xp 2 hd one 80g and 6g. 512 cruicial pc2700. I just thought that this was suppose to run atleast 2000. I have been reading about some people going as high as 3000 so why can't I get my to run at least stock speed!!!! If you need any other info just let me know. My bios is revision is 1006 should I download an update of some kind!
Thanks for any help you may give!!!
Asus boards have a problem saving the bios settings. This may also be a problem you are having.
I hope Asus has a bios revision to correct this problem...
If your jumpers are set correctly, hit Del during post to enter Bios, then adjust you settings so your FSB is 166 and your CPU multiplier is 11, and ensure that the memory ratio is 1:1 while you're there. That should sort you out.

When I start it up it tells me that I have a amd xp 1100! I checked the jumpers on the board they look OK! So I was just wondering if anyone could offer any pointers on how to get this thing at least to what it is suppose to run! I would greatly apperciate any help you could give me.
Doh, anyways, if the BIOS update and the BIOS settings dont work youll need a newer board. The only other possible alternative is to maybe play with the CPU core voltage, but be careful cuz that can fry yer baby!Although it may allow you to boot yer older board with a higher FSB and multiplier setting........This i would see as a band aid to keep you chugging until you get a new board. Visit http://www.buyxtremegear.com and get yerself a nice MSI nforce 2 board for 80 bucks. **note to self** always knew there was a reason i didnt like the word "albatron".............

Josh - Thanks for the Info, I tried to update the BIOS, but for some reason I all ways get a "Can't find Source File" error. I tried the other 333 BIOS updates at Albatron's web site also ... Same error. It comes up as soon as I answer "No" to "Do You Want to Save BIOS" (old BIOS).

Richard-

You need BIOS R1.06 to run a Barton on that board. You can get it here:
http://www.albatron.com.tw/english/it/mb/bios.asp?pro_id=33

Then you want to set your CPU Frequency Jumper to pins 3-4 for a 166MHz FSB. And while you're there, enabble OTP (Over Temperature Protection) by setting the jumper to pins 2-3.
If you have SW1 (CPU Ratio Select Switch) then set it properly to an 11X multiplier by moving them all to ( - ).
Now go into BIOS and Advanced Cipset Features> Dram Clock/ Drive Control> Dram Timing, and set your memory to SPD.
Now check your processor in Frequency/ Voltage Control> Cpu Ratio, make sure it's at 11X. An your CPU clock should be 166 MHz.
You should be good to go now.

Does any one know anything about the Albatron KX400 +Pro MOBO?
I installed a 2500xp Barton 333. I can get it to run when BIOS are set up, but It locks up after A while seems to run ok if I leave the BIOS at Default, 133FSB 266DDR Speed and 11.5. If I set it up it does see the Processor as a 1.83GHz, But locks UP. I do have 1GB PC2700
