OK I can dig that, but in tying the phone to a usage contract (AT&T), this is incurring a debt. Isn't it?
Gerritt

Interesting point. I'm no law expert though I'll admit. I think this one can go either way.

And no matter what the law says, the fact is that they should accept cash because it's the right thing to do.
No its legal in the US. You have to accept cash if someone is paying you back for a dept by US law. But if someone is purchasing something they don't have to accept cash if you don't yet owe them a debt.

I'm pretty sure that the debit/credit card only policy is illegal.
Federal Reserve Notes still have the "Legal Tender for all Debts and Transactions" or something like that still printed on them the last time I looked....hehe I personally don't handle a lot of cash. If a retail outlet needs to deter theft or robbery by not having any cash on the premises, they still have to take a check, certified check or money order....I think.

To institute a debit/credit instrument only policy in order to track purchaces will most likely be challenged in the courts very quickly.
What the hell is "Eftpos?"

Although many debit cards are of the Visa or MasterCard brand, there are many other types of debit card, each accepted only within a particular country or region, for example Switch (now: Maestro) and Solo in the United Kingdom, Carte Bleue in France, Laser in Ireland, "EC electronic cash" (formerly Eurocheck) in Germany and EFTPOS cards in Australia and New Zealand. The need for cross-border compatibility and the advent of the euro recently led to many of these card networks (such as Switzerland's "EC direkt", Austria's "Bankomatkasse" and Switch in the United Kingdom) being rebranded with the internationally recognised Maestro logo, which is part of the MasterCard brand. Some debit cards are dual branded with the logo of the (former) national card as well as Maestro (e.g. EC cards in Germany, Laser cards in Ireland, Switch and Solo in the UK, Pinpas cards in the Netherlands, Bancontact cards in Belgium, etc.). Debit card systems have become popular in video arcades, bowling centers and theme parks. The use of a debit card system allows operators to package their product more effectively while monitoring customer spend. An Example of one of these systems is ECS by Embed International.

Cash makes me nervous. It's so easy to lose, be stolen, damage beyond recognition, etc. I trust a bank more than myself with money, apparently. Ah well. I'm not planning on buying any cellphone in this lifetime.
