Ok thank you so much! When I've done a bit more work, I'm going to search around to see if someone has made a CD like you said, or if there may be a simpler tutorial.

I did install Linux to my USB, but knowing my luck it won't work and I haven't had time to test it yet.

You're welcome for what little help I can provide, but I'm afraid I'm out of answers. I don't think trying it from CD is helping matters at all - a number of those instructions (editing .conf files etc) simply cannot be done when running from CD to the best of my knowledge. There are folks around here with far more Linux knowledge than me (especially where it comes to CD-based versions); perhaps one of them will see this and step in.

Another thing that might be worth investigating is whether someone else has put together a Ubuntu live CD that already includes support for your wireless adapter. I expect you could build your own too, but I honestly don't know what that would take (but suspect it would be a lot more trouble than fiddling with a wireless adapter)

Thanks. That has helped alot. However- I don't think I should continue with Ubuntu. It all seems a bit too hard...

By the way, do you know if I can still do this, even if I'm running from CD? I would like to see if I can get the internet working before I properly install it.

I opened the terminal and typed: uname-r to find out my kernel version. This did not work so I tried various ways of typing it and gave up (I'm going to assume I have 2.6)

In another readme file I found, It said:

Please check which driver you should use:
1. Insert ASUS 167g into USB port.
2. cat /proc/usb/devices.
3. Check vendor id and product id of ASUS WLAN device.
4. Follow the README file in related directory to compile and install driver.

I tried typing cat /proc/usb/devices, but I could not get to this.

It also said that dos had not been installed and I typed what it told me to to install it, but there was a problem.

Is there not a work around for this? Is there no program which installs things for you? I don't want to give up on Ubuntu, but I'm back at college now so I can't spend too long experimentiing.

Would you like me to show you a screen shot of all the files I have?

These are, IMHO, pretty crummy install instructions even by Linux standards...

What are the Makefile.x versions they provide (type "ls Makefile.*" [no quotes] in the driver package directory)?

Typically "your kernel" would be a reference to the version of the kernel you're running - either 2.4 or 2.6 (this is by far the most likely). I forget now how to get the kernel version from the cmd line; perhaps "uname -r", IIRC?

So if your kernel version is 2.6, and there is a Makefile.2.6 file, do "cp Makefile.2.6 Makefile" here.

if lack of libstdc++.so.6, cp ./LINUX_RACONFIG_Vx.x.x.x/libstdc++.so.6 /usr/lib

Type "ls /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6" - if this returns a file listing, you've got the proper shared library, and so don't need to do anything here. If it returns a file not found error or similar, you need to execute the copy command specified above. It looks like you may also need to make a substitution here related to your kernel version (like, "cp ./LINUX_RACONFIG_V2.6.22.14/libstdc++.so.6" ) This depends on the contents of the driver archive, though.

The rest of the instructions look like they can be taken literally...good luck, and let us know how it goes.

So I take it I do not enter this literally, I have to change a few things, like where it says "x is your kernal"?

I have never done programming, or whatever this is before, but I would really like to learn how to use Ubuntu/Linux. I cannot find a site that explains this for beginners.

In Linux, you usually have to enter specific commands in the command line to install drivers. Typically, I place my driver downloads in /home/username so I don't have to type in a long file location. Easy to remember. The instructions should tell you what commands to pass in the console.

I'm new to Linux and would like to experiment with Ubuntu. Ubuntu sees my network but will not connect. I use an Asus WL-167G USB and downloaded the driver/s for it, but it just looks like a load of files to me.

It has readmes which I do not understand. I take it you have to place the files in the right folders yourself?
