It pretty much looks like the final nail in the coffin was driven with the news that Toshiba is backing out of their distribution of HD players.

Feels sorry for those who jumped the gun and purchased HD players.
I think that the final blow to HD-DVD is when Warner Bros. and Walmart ( I believe both are the biggest in their own catagories, i.e. film and retailer, in the world) said they would switch to Blu-ray exclusively.

Toshiba to give up on HD DVD, end format war: source
Sun Feb 17, 2008 4:31pm EST

TOKYO (Reuters) - Toshiba Corp (6502.T: Quote, Profile, Research) is planning to give up on its HD DVD format for high definition DVDs, conceding defeat to the competing Blu-Ray technology backed by Sony Corp (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research), a company source said on Saturday.

"We have entered the final stage of planning to make our exit from the next generation DVD business," said the source, who asked not to be identified. He added that an official announcement could come as early as next week.

Now, just waiting to see what happens to the prices of Blu-Ray players, burner, blank media, and movies now. I saw a Blu-Ray burner at Newegg today for $360.
Well from past experience with sony. Most of the formats they make fail. Why? Well it isnt that it is a bad product.. beta, there music format etc. Its that sony shoots them selves in the foot every time. They wouldnt share there beta (which was better quality) nor there audio format (i forget the name). Thus we never see it around. They did share the cd though.

Imo with blue ray, the only reason it is still around is that they keep pumping $ into the advertising and buying off companies to have them use it. Doing that is all fine and well, but hd-dvd has what 1/4 the advertising and is doing almost as well in being out there to the public.

But mainly due to the price difference, if one goes under or quits/backs off i would say it will be blue ray.

Toshiba aired a HD-DVD ad during the Super Bowl, so it appears they aren't giving up just yet. Unless every studio goes on one side or the other, we could see a multi-format industry which would be great for competition and the consumers. Samsung and LG have dual format players out and both of them have just launched their second generation dual format players. But until there is a cheap dual format player or a clear winner, I got my trusty Pioneer 1080p upscaling DVD player. It's not as good as an HD-DVD/Blu-Ray but from back on the couch which is fourteen feet away, you can't see the difference much anyway.

I'm in the same boat. I have no HD TVs and I have no intention of getting one. The old tubes, VCRs, and DVD players still work great.

And, here we sit, being jerked around again until the next technology supercedes both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD...triggering another round of consumer spending just to play catch-up in an increasingly **IA dominated world.

I wonder what would happen if Microsoft (HD-DVD), instead of looking at acquiring Yahoo, looked at acquiring one or more of these major movie houses? Does MS even have the resources to do that?
BD-DVD release was pretty silly (nothing going for it except PS3)...but HD-DVD was even more silly (it's like no one except Toshiba really cared). IMO, both formats failed but if any of them have momentum, it is BD-DVD.

http://blogs.pcworld.com/staffblog/archives/006159.html

Warner Brothers--until now the only studio that was continuing to release titles in both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD formats--has announced it will be moving to Blu-ray Disc exclusively in 2008.

The studio's decision to go Blu-ray means Blu-ray clearly has the advantage with regard to content: With the backing of Warner plus Blu-ray stalwarts Disney, Fox, Lionsgate, MGM, and Sony, Blu-ray Disc holds the content advantage. It's now the better bet of the two warring formats--if for no other reason that the movies you want are more likely to come out on Blu-ray than on HD DVD.

HD-DVD was seeing a decline this past year, but this sudden move by Warner Brothers is a huge loss in the campaign against Blu-ray. Although Warner will continue to sell HD-DVD titles into 2008, they will no longer be producing for both HD-DVD and Blu-ray. However, Paramount is still in the HD game going exclusively HD-DVD which means HD-DVD isn't dead yet. On the other hand, it would appear that Sony's move to incorporate Blu-ray in to their PS3s has paid off for the time being.
