check here
http://www.linux.org/dist/list.html

selet your platform and select "minimalist" in the category.

it will give you a list of linux versions that are bootable from ffloppy.
i would not expect a gui, so if you are compfortable with the command line thats the way
to go

Hmmm... interesting problem... Here's how you can boot from a usb flash drive that has linux:
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/
But if you BIOS doesn't support booting from usb, then what if you try booting with a floppy that has usb drivers, then pop a live cd into an external drive and off you go. Those floppies usually can be created by recovery software such as "RecoverSoft™ Media Tools Professional". Good luck

Hi.

I have a Sony Fx802 Laptop, which has no hard drive, has something burned out electronically which prevents it reading a internal hard drive - i've tried - it's internal cd is screwed.

I would like a floppy disk image which would enable me to boot live linux knoppix (or any version of linux) from a external cd drive - The Bios does not directly drive USB

I have tried hunting around the net.
