SP1 was already finalized and RTM, they just hadn't released it officially until yesterday. That's what I've had installed. No beta releases here.

Those "critical updates" that you speak of... if you are a user who is running a computer that has the hardware that NEEDS those critical updates, you won't have the option of downloading SP1. Moot point.

The reason why i said get as many windows updates because they are some critical updates that needed to be installed before running Vista SP1. just last week MS put out a critical update that needed to be running on your machine before you run the update. Well i am still waiting for SP3 for my XP machine. The Vista SP1 you install before yesterday was the beta version and the first final release was yesterday. My advice is to uninstall that one and download the final version which was only released by MS March 18th 2008.

SP1 performance so far:
there is a noticeable increase in system performance. The large file transfer which was one of vista sticking point seem to be fixed so far. i have not transfered any file over a gig as yet just under 500mb or so. but even these were an issue before in vista. i have not yet did the copy and paste test which was also a concern. these little test are really for the basic home user who had simple task which was not a problem in XP. advanced network or vpn test will not be covered here. if there is any question or test you would want me to run before you run sp1 please ask and i will try it out.

final note i had install sp1 through windows update. but on the MS site they also have a standalone option. i also have that one in which i will install on another machine to see if it is better to install from windows update or the standalone version of course anyone who did it through stand alone can tell me what happen

Nothing to great over SP2 other than it has all post updates with some very minor tweaks. Get a few more FPS here and there and even some loss.

Why would you want to install all the updates and then SP1? Since SP1 has all the previous updates in it, you're just wasting your time. :-\ I've been running SP1 for a few weeks now, no major problems here.
