I changed the jumper set to Slave and made it Master. That fixed my problem. Thanks for your input!

Are the drives recognized in Device Manager? If not are mobo drivers installed? Try setting drive jumpers, one drive as master the other as slave, that should hopefully fix your problem.
Good luck.

Someone recently installed Windows XP on my computer, a Dell Dimension 4100. Since then, neither one of my CD drives are recognized by my computer. I downloaded and installed XP compatible drivers and still no luck. The CD drives are a HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8483B and a NEC DV-5700A (DVD ROM). Both the drives have power to them and both CD drives attempt to read CDs. I checked the cords and they are all plugged in. I even unplugged them and plugged them back in, thinking the plug-and-play feature would recognize them as new hardware, but they weren't recognized. The HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8483B was intermittently recognized by my computer for the first few days after the XP install, but my computer's device manager eventually stopped showing any CD-ROMs. If anyone could offer some advice, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

By the way, the jumper setting on one CD drive is set to Slave and the jumper on the other CD drive is set to Cable Select. Is that a problem?
