John Lennon was not a communist. He was a humanist with an overly optimistic viewpoint of humans. All modern communist systems still divide the population into the controllers and the controlled, he wanted nothing to do with either. A better discription of Lennon would be that he was a populist with socialist leanings.....or a democrat.
Yes, we have an enormous abundance of food and yes, we lead sedatary lifestyles (brains make more money than brawn). The result is an obese society. I think it is a good thing actually. I mean, if all the soil of the world could no longer produce food, who would live the longest? XD

Edit: Skinny dudes with stretched stomachs win eating competitions. They go hurl it up after the competition is over. Beware, if they get punched in the stomach in the mean time, it just might kill them.

That's where you are wrong. The Phalanx CIWS has it's own targetting system and does not relying on AEGIS at all. Besides, AEGIS is mostly software so all it would take is an update and viola, those missiles are now redundant. AEGIS looks in all directions all the time.

The older medium range missiles which were controlled by AEGIS maybe couldn't take care of them but the new stuff can.

In the words of John Lennon:

Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Also, one more thing that grinds my gears.....America's main health issue is Obesity. i.e. the U.S eats too much( over 70% of Americans ( along with other countries to a lesser degree ) ). Now the main problem with 3rd world countries is the lack of food and malnutrition...along with other diseases such as AIDS etc.
A couple of observances on the side issues here.
Are aircraft carriers vulnerable? Yes!

This was proven back in the Falkland Islands War when Exocet (AM-39) missles took out the HMS Sheffield Destroyer and damaged the HMS Invincible Light Aircraft Carrier (our British friends still deny this happened) back in the early 80's. One of the reasons for the denial is that Early warning aircraft reported a "pop-up" at 50 miles, but no action was taken by command and control.

So, just like airbourne systems, most of our operational surface craft also deploy chaff and flare systems. This is also why the Navy has P-3 Orion and E-2 AWACS aircraft in the air extending our realtime monitoring of incoming threats out to over 150 miles. But all of this informational and targeting information is worthless if the Aegis system is in standby mode; if it is, as it was in the case of the USS Stark, it is most likely due to the downing of Iran Air 655 by the Captain of the USS Vincennes the "RoboCruiser", when the civilian, commercial aircraft DID NOT broadcast a IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) signal and was shot down (unlike the Flight 007 that did and was still shot down by the Russians) that is internationally recognized. So even today, it's not the technology that is adding or depleting the defensive capability of our Naval craft, but the human and command, and dare I say political decisions associated with them. This is not to say that I want the systems to be totally without human intervention, because even as flawed as we are, we're still better off than trying to program a computer to be agressive enough, but not too agressive as to provide for proper defense. "Collateral Damage" will happen, this is a reality.

OK, enough about surface craft vulnerabilities. Submarine Boomers. Contrary to what the "Hunt for Red October" would have you believe (though it is scarily acurate), it's more difficult to possition resources off of our coast than some seem to believe. Let's just say that IF the Chinese boomers (missle subs) attempted to get into a launch configuration, they would most likely get a big suprise. Hunter subs are dang near as quite as boomers, and present a much smaller target echo, so as long as there targets stay deep, the targets don't likely know they're there. Nuclear tipped torpedos are not necessary in order to bring down a target that is unaware of you.....

Insofar as Rutherford...Only ONE of the three types of radiation is considered to be "ray" and thus highly penitrative...and this is GAMMA (this is what cooks you instantaniously even if you are issolated from the direct thermal effects. The other two, Alpha and Beta are excited particles. Thus the environmental suits, and the washing of consumables. Of course we could all be wrong and exposure to any of these particles (that exist in granite) could be destroying our capability to reproduce without a nuclear explosion.

BAH! Yes BAH! I say. We've allowed our technology to outstrip our capability to manage it, much less, understand it. It is OUR lack of understanding that leads us to the situation we are in. We are SO diversified and diverted by the millions of feeds from the internet and 1000 channels of BS on TV that we've lost the CAPABILITY to focus on what is TRUELY IMPORTANT! Our lives, our families, our communities, our counties, our world, and our race (HUMAN, not any of that other s**t!).

OK so that was my $0.37 worth.....

This is the last post I'll spend on this issue. It could just keep going back and forth.

You're still missing the point about the missiles that skim the ocean until they jump up and then come straight down on the target from 90 degrees. They were designed specifically to counter these Aegis-derivative counter-measures, or Phalanx. They are designed to be undetectable until they go vertical (out of range of Phalanx) and by that time they're supposed to be too close and leave too little time left for any other on-ship counter-measures system to react.

The Phalanx cannot handle those missiles by the time they are in range. The Phalanx's range of elevation is limited to 70 degrees, when the missile is coming in at close to 90 degrees.

From Wikipedia:
Phalanx has been developed through a number of different configurations. The basic style is the Block 0. The Block 1 (1988) offers various improvements in radar, ammunition, rate of fire, increasing engagement elevation to +70 degrees...

john albrich said:
I've seen it reported (and I hope they're wrong) but they are believed by some to be virtually defenseless against the newer missile that cruises at sea-level, and then before it hits the target, jumps up vertically to come down right on top of the target. Supposedly, Aegis-derivative systems can't defend against that missile at all, and there isn't enough warning for anything else.

The Phalanx can hit pretty much anything that moves. It really doesn't care how it moves because it simply puts up a wall of metal. Should the missile come in to contact with any of those hundreds of bullets, it's done for...and that's only the short range counter. The medium range missiles most likely would hit it long before it comes to that.

For more info on the Phalanx, see here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phalanx_CIWS

Video of it in operation:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgpQBZF2sZQ

Here's a clip from the sea based version destroying one of those sea skimming missiles you were talking about:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nY6nm-6eCzM&feature=related

Edit: There is also the SeaRAM which works in tandem with the Phalanx:
i would not worry about the carriers. they are well equipped and can take a hit with one missile. in a battle group formation the subs are providing surface vessel information. anything that travels on or near the surface in a 5 mile range can and will be detected. once a missile enters this range it will be to late to engage a counter missile but automated 50 cal guns on deck of the carrier will be able to react in time to destroy the missile before impact. our navy is still very powerful, if not the most powerful in the world and thats even thou we shrunk extremely and are still shrinking.
on d-day there were over 2500 ships off the coast of Normandy. the navy has now less then 350 ships total. goodtimes
