I've posted several times about why, in my instance, I'd go with 8GB. I've not yet done so, but I still have issues with certain applications.
In a new system build, go for 2x2GB modules.
If you run into some of the issues I have, then pop for the extra.
I can't run my system on 2GB stable, much less 1GB, mayhap you can.
If not, I think the price/performance point right now is at 2x2GB giving the OPTION of going higher as need be.
the only game where i've seen my RAM usage over 50% is with Supreme Commander Forged Alliance build 3599 (before the patch it never got over 47%). It got all the way to 54%.

Thats running it under Vista 64, acting as game server, 8 players (2 human), on a 40x40 km map, all eye candy set to max at 1920 x 1200 res, with the logitec G15 software and AVG Free (not scanning) running in the background.

The game runs significantly faster than it did on my old system which was an Athlon X2 4600 @ 2.6GHz | 2GB | 8800GT | Win XP SP2 the speed bump probably has as much to do with the faster processor as it does increased RAM... memory usage would show up as 97 or 98% with 2 or 3 gigs in the page file.

8GB is probably overkill but I figured why not since it was so cheap.

I first had 2GB, sold them and got a pair of 2GB x 2 for a 4GB setup. I later on got another 2 x 2GB for a total of 8GB. After running my system with 2GB, than 4GB I seen a big difference in how smooth windows ran, but after going with the 8GB, absolutely no hickups what so ever in games and in windows. Vista x64 is still a tad buggy, but overall it runs great. Is 8GB overkill? HELL NO

I think 4GB is great for gaming, a lot better than 2GB. If you can pick up 8GB of DDR2 for a good price, than what are you waiting for.

Windows Vista x64 rocks
Too right 8GiB overkill. Unless of course you're doing some serious video apps for
Pixar or somin - which i don;t think you are. You'd have wasted money on ram
that's not gonna even get used. Save your money for some DDR3. What's wrong
with the ram you have already? You have 4GiB of PC8500 already!
Out of my 4GiB, it's rarely over 40% and that's whilst playin Crysis which's
a stupidly overly demanding game. So that's more than half of my 4GB sitting
doing zilch!

The bottom line I would say is that, if you're doing something really nutty and you need 8GB (of cheap DDR2 anyway), or you just really want it for bragging rights, go for it. If not, 4GB is probably more than enough. I use 2GB and I don't think I've ever seen my usage go above 1.5GB except when using VMware.

Corsair - 4GB RAM Better Than 2GB
http://www.overclockersclub.com/news/22285/

So if 4GB is better than 2GB, I would say 8GB is better than 4GB I love 8GB, my system runs so much more smoother when gaming on my 46" HDTV.8)
