Like I said, you have to know who and what you're dealing with. For instance, you should never walk into a biker bar wearing a pink shirt, or any color shirt that has french cuffs. Inversely, a biker shouldn't walk into a bar in the Castro District of SF, CA wearing leather chaps.....
Yes.
Back then at least.
Most if not all Turkish men used to carry a short "cerimonial" dagger with them that they got when they came of age. Any "poke" bellow the waist was not considered to be an attempt at life, so was just a return of an insult, and would not be punished under Turkish law. This and the other things only applied to non-turkish persons. If you insulted a Turk, and were witnessed to do so, you could face time in Turkish prison.
Now for the short periods of time that I was there, I did not see any of these things occur, but was told in official briefings that such things had in fact happened. Like I said, I found them to be quite engaging people myself. Of course, not acting like a stereotypical Ugly American, probably helped me not to see the stereotypical Ugly Turk.

I seem to recall during my in-briefing that there were 2 things you had to be aware of.
Insult laws. If a Turk thought he was being insulted, he was allowed to stab you in the buttocks with a knife. This was due to the fact that they considered the stabing to be a return of the insult. So to get around this, just be very polite, at least in the way you gave an insult. Even the worst, given in a pleasant tone of voice, would rarely, because most Turks at that point in time didn't speak English, result in a perferated ass.
Secondly, if you hired work, such as a taxi, and the driver ran over someone or something, throw some cash and run like hell! If your taxi driver ran over a chicken, you had to pay for that chicken and all of the offspring it may have had....and don't even stay around for an accident where a child was harmed.
As a foreigner never go to a Turkish brothel, as you're probably disrespecting the husband or brother of the gal you're there with.....if you're not a Turk.
Having gotten this information, I found them to be reletively nice folks, mayhap a little "behind the times", but reasonable and pleasant.

Wha!? Is that for Real man?
