Disconnect, reinstall the game, reconnect, log in with ur steamid and save ur password etc, disconnect, restart steam, play in off line mode

That may work.

Your dvd will install, but the updates will come from server. Pain in the arse eh!
Next time, back up and it'll be less time consuming

If its downloading how do i make it so it doesnt?

i'm running the set up from the DVD.

cant install the games in offline mode, and this cach crap is doin my nut in.

Tam me last rant about steam was when it wouldnt update. found out they had problems with certain servers..

Steam itself runs fine...just none of the games will install lol

It'll be downloading the game, and believe me, STEAM can take fookin ages.
I'll say it again.. I HATE STEAM! I want to choose how I install and how I update.
Did you not post something similar a good few months back??

ok well fresh install of XP on a new PC

AMD 5000, Abit Mobo, 2GB DDR800, ATI X1950pro, 250GB Hitachi SATAII HDD.

Now...everything else works fine, Steam installed and updated.

****I must stress at this point, due to just moving i'm on Dial up cus the wonderfull people at BT havent activated the line yet****.

I never used to have a problem with installing Halflife 2 before...just cant work out why its so slow now.

It gets stuck on ' Creating local game cache files...' i tried it yesterday and after 3 hours i just gave up. I'm running the installation straight from the DVD which spins up on setup then after 2 mins dies off.

I've checked with steam and no solution on there and i dont know if anyone else has had the same problem.

whats really p*ssin me off is the fact that i've also got Ep1&2 to put on yet.

IS this because this machine is on dialup? because i didnt think it had to download anyhing when installin from DVD....:/
