One thing I would do is disable/keep from starting any and all Roxio and X10 software. You can use a program like Microsoft/Sysinternals "Autoruns" to do that. http://majorgeeks.com/Autoruns_d4686.html

Then, use Administrative Services to turn off auto-start of any services associated with them as well (don't delete them)

Then, reboot and see if browsing the internet still causes the BSOD.

Those are not all errors, Hijackthis will always display around this many entries. There is a nice tutorial here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html

Here is the UBUNTU Live CD:
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

With Hiren's, if you go under Dos Tools, you can't see SATA support?

Carl,
I've recently had a very rare occurance of a BSOD in VISTA on my primary machine, and upon digging through the Dr. Watson/debug files it appears to be associated with my Logitec drivers, and has been excerbated by a recent MS update.
Check the Logitech site if you use these devices.

In particular, once you verify your system can indeed supply sufficient power for your configuration, I'd first focus on the drivers for the video card. My personal experience has been when only internet browsing causes BSOD...especially if you're viewing news vids or other videos when it happens...it's often associated with the graphics drivers.

As a diagnostic (not a fix)...You might try avoiding videos, or disabling the ability to view them (e.g. flash player, QT, and other vid players), and see if that makes a difference in the symptoms. You can even experiment with options in your browser or Java console to keep certain actions from being started from within a web-page (e.g. stop vids, pop-ups, animation, etc)

Carl Kenny said:
...i was trying to run the hdd tool and a message came up saying .WARNING NO DRIVERS FOUND .so i thought i need drivers for the hdd.so i went to the packard bell site and couldent find them very strange .i dont want to pay 1 pound a min to talk to there tec guys so is theres anyware else i can get the drivers please let me know .my hdd i think is a 7200rpm SATA.....

This might also work. These are the instructions for using the UBCD bootable diagnostics CD.

Question: How can I access my SATA HDD from the UBCD?
You may need to configure your BIOS so that the SATA HDD is detected on either the primary or secondary IDE channel. This can be done by switching the SATA drive from “enhanced mode” to “compatibility mode” in BIOS (compatibility mode is sometimes called “native mode” or “IDE mode”). Unfortunately, not all BIOSes support this feature.

Or, since you originally said you can get Windows to run as long as you aren't using the internet...you can just download the Windows version of UBCD called appropriately, "UBCD4Win" and run the disk operations from within Windows. (see my earlier post for link to UBCD website). That way the HDD(s) is already up and running.

Although, I'm not sure that running any tests on the HDD is going to uncover what's wrong that causes a BSOD that only happens when you're using the internet. As Joshua says, it's more likely a system resource control issue.
Well the problem with Hiren's is that it is basically DOS based and sometimes does not load the correct drivers for SATA drives.

Your other choice is to obtain the hard drive diagnostic Utility for Windows and perform the test within Windows or try a Linux Live CD, something like UBUNTU.

From what you posted on where you experience the blue screens the most, it sounds like the problem occurs when you are using a decent amount of resources. This can be due to many things: bad graphics card, overheating problems, low quality power supply, etc.

I looked closer at the error message, check these out:
Boot the system with self-booting diagnostics media, and run diagnostics using at least a memory test.

I recommend freeware UBCD and I generally recommend starting with the bare minimum of devices needed to run the diagnostics, (e.g. PSU, mobo, display, keyboard, NO mouse, 1 stick of RAM) running each diagnositc sequence and then progressively adding more memory and then more of your devices until the "bad" element is found (if hardware). You may even find it's the CPU in an early test (but let's hope not).

However, some people prefer a less rigorous approach and just run the diagnostics with everything still installed and see what happens.

You get a thorough system test suite in UBCD (Ultimate Boot CD). The self-booting CD tests multiple system components: memory, CPU, hard drives, peripherals, etc. It does a very thorough job and is extremely easy to use. Among other things, UBCD includes memtest86 memory diagnostics.

Although it's reported version ver4.1.2 is available, the latest version I could obtain was 4.1.1
http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/
http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/download.html
You can download a .iso, .exe self-extracting, or .zip file depending on what connection speed you have. (download filesizes range from 87mb to 115mb) The .iso file is easiest as you just download it and then burn the .iso image to a CD using Nero, or CDburnerXP, or burnatonce, etc.

MD5/SHA-1 Hash Verification
I do recommend performing a hash verification to make sure your downloads aren't corrupted. Long downloads tend to be somewhat vulnerable. Use a program like freeware Fingerprint to calculate the MD5 hash and compare to the value provided by the download site.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/FingerPrint_d4388.html
http://www.2brightsparks.com/

Important System Handling Advice
You should use proper ESD (Electro-Static Discharge) handling and parts storage procedures at all times. ESD damage can cause permanent damage to computer parts. ESD damage may be immediate or may not be noticed until months after the actual ESD event. ESD damage can produce entirely unpredictable failures and may even mimic other types of software and hardware failures.

Remember that the PSU's AC mains power must be turned off or the wall-plug disconnected before you add or remove any device in the computer. Wait a few minutes after removing power before connecting or disconnecting anything. After waiting, some people also recommend pushing the front panel power button to bleed-off any residual energy in the PSU. Safety Note: system fans may spin when you do this. AC mains power must be removed. Just turning the system off by using the front power switch is NOT enough and can result in permanent damage to the hardware.

Both ESD and/or not disconnecting mains power while handling components in the system also have the potential to corrupt CMOS, which could also corrupt system, CPU, and RAM voltage and timings settings.

Well for the RAM, get memtest86. You can get a CD image in ISO forma and make a bootable CD: http://www.memtest.org/#downiso
Once you boot off the CD, it will go directly into the tests.

For the hard drive, go to your manufacturer's page, and download free diagnostic utilities from them. It basically works the same way, you can get an ISO image and boot from it into the utility.

If you want a shortcut to all of this, get Hiren's Boot CD: http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd (it has all these utilities and much more!)

i just got another bsod and this time it dident hace the (sys) part in the message .i rebooted fine then the windows problem page told me that it was a hardware problemand listed these possibles as it couldent find out for me the specific hardware part that was faultly.

Random Access Memory (RAM)
System board
Central Processing Unit (CPU)
Power supply

these were the things that could be the problem so is there a way of testing each part with out breaking the bank with new replacements that may not work?
The BSOD never happens wen i boot into windows or open any aplication.it happens rarely wen im browsing the internet. But for some reason it happens a lot at infrequent times wen im playing online games .for example on world of war craft it happens sometimes .and wen im not getting bsod then in the game it slows down a lot very stange .it freezes a lot the game that is .it mostly freezes in the game wen say im to going or leave a battleground or to do something that i think reqireres more ram or graphics .wen i bought this computer i had the graphics card changed so the geforce 8800 gts was not the original graphics card.also ive installed the latest drivers of this card and tryed to roll them back and reinstall but still the problem persists.if there is any thing else that i need to tell u please say.
