network types are different between XP and Vista, I get remote access warning come up when im on the server..

Check the firewalls, Both windows and if you are using another type.. turn then off and see if it works.. you need to asign a workgroup, IP, and matching subnet. try the wizzard out on the vista machine and make the disc for the XP machine.
You can read about a patch cable here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patch_cable

If you use one of these to connect two computers, you will get limited connectivity unless you assign the IPs manually as explained above. Just go to the TCP/IP properties of the network adapters and assign the information there.
You can try a patch cable and manually assign the information, that's how I connect using 1 Gb cards to my Server, so this is what I do:

My PC
IP - 1.2.3.10
Subnet Mask: 255.0.0.0

Server
IP - 1.2.3.11
Subnet Mask: 255.0.0.0

So from my PC, if I want to access the Server, I would type in the explorer address bar \\1.2.3.11

This has worked for me in games and everything else.

go onto the system that is reporting limited connectivity, open the command prompt and type "ipconfig" then press enter... write back what it says.

LAN using cross cable connection XP and Vista

I just tried connecting my XP desktop to my new laptop with Vista basic as its OS. The problem is in the connection icon located at the taskbar says that my connection is only limited. There's also an exclamation point. Then I tried checking my connection by creating a LAN game in warcraft 3. The weird things is that when i create a game using windows xp my laptop cant join the game but if i create the game on my vista laptop my desktop can join the game. I tried creating a game server for xp with the bame bootfighter windomXP and it works. Vista can join the XP game on bootfighter. I cant also access my shared drive on vista coz i made my drive D on xp as a shared drive. What do you think is the problem? By the way i only use cross data cable connection to connect my desktop to my laptop.
