I live in Florida, were the gun ownership laws are "layed back". I don't have a problem with background checks, and registration, but some "crackpots" don't even want this. Then again the Minutemen (the original bunch, not the crackpots at the border now ) were crackpots until the British Regulars came ashore.

What is oddly contrarian to the concept of more legal guns = more murders or accidental deaths, is the fact that the most dangerous cities in the US exist within states or districts with the most restrictive gun possession laws. In fact the most heinous incidents all seem to happen in areas where gun posession is forbidden, such as schools, courthouses, post offices, etc.

Oh, and BTW, the murder rate in London, England is continually trending upwards, though they are becoming even more restrictive on gun ownership. Does anyone else see a trend here?

Just my "50Cent" worth.....

The States is far too far gone to change firearms ownership laws.

I agree with you Gerrit, in that by all means you should be able to protect your family, friends etc from harm, and because you live in a country like the States, where firearms get into the wrong hands, and there is a diverse range of people, this may be more necessary than other parts of the world, but for somewhere like South Africa or Columbia to impose new laws allowing ownership of firearms for defense, would be stupid, and would not work.

Its pretty Catch 22. But I think the States could ease their laws on firearm ownership, and then again, I don't know every states personal laws on this. But some are pretty laid back about it aren't they?

I wasn't going to enter this particular fray, but some of the statements here make it impossible for me to not do so.
Firstly. Someone mentioned the War on Drugs, and someone mentioned the evil pot smokers as deadly pervayers(sp) of crime. This just isn't so, though the pot DEALERs could fit this scenerio. If it weren't for the multi-billion dollar industry around the ILLEGAL provision of an established market, the only thing that pot would kill were the smokers themselves, due to excessive twinky consumtion leading to a diabetic shutdown.

Secondly. Some of the countries with the LOWEST personal firearm ownership have the HIGHEST firearm related murder rates, including Columbia, and many African nations. There are other countries where the firearm related murder rates are lower, but the actual murder rates are higher. If you ask me, I'd rather be shot (I have been), than be hacked up by a machete.

Thirdly. I not only qualified marksman while in the military, but after my military service, needed to aquire, and did aquire a multi-state concealed carry permit. I also took part in many IPSC matches as a hobby as well as a way to keep my skills up to date (see http://www.ipsc.org).

I am now married, and have been for some time to a Japanese woman, who hates firearms of all types. I made her go out to a firing range to familiarize her with the weapons in the house. She disliked the experience, but does know the safe handling of a weapon, and has a respect for what they can do. Since the birth of my daughters, I've attempted to move away from those jobs that may require my carrying a weapon as part of my job, but maintain that I should be permitted to have them. I've not shot at a human in about 20 years, but if someone threatens my family, I retain the capability, and in my interpretation, the right to do so if the occasion arises.

In a country as diverse as the USA, whether socially, financially, or psycologicly, there will be conflict. The ease of weapon ownership, legal or illegal, is a contributary not a causial factor. As long as people are given the option of working for minimum wage or making $1000/day illegally, and status is based upon what and who you own, this will not change. If we put as much money into education of the poor in this country as we put into WARS; whether on DRUGS or MADE UP THREATS; we'd probably be better off.

My BEER GOGGLED rant is over for now.
Peace to you all.
BTW, I sincerely hope that I never, EVER p**s DublinGunner off!!!!

While I probably wouldn't torture this person I definately would not go out of my way to make them comfortable. Someone like this does not have enough to offer society to justify their contiued use of our air, food, and water.

Even if such an individual could be rehabilitated, their debts to the people are so great that they cannot possibly be repaid. Follow procedure, give him a trial, after he is found guilty, take him out back line up the firing squad and let one of the victims family members give the order to shoot.

Now this is an opinion I can agree with.

DublinGunner said:
To show that you'll get severely punished when committing crimes of such magnitude.

And the general populous are foing to have an outcry for a knife weilding maniac? Give me a break.

A simple execution would be too easy, and it would cost too much (and not deserved) to be put in prison.

You would be surprised what the general populace will think. Although they would hate to see this guy back on the streets (which he won't be), at least in Canada, torture is also a big no-no.

When did execution become simple or too easy? Death is death. Choosing to end one's life as punishment is basically saying "we don't want you among us anymore, go and die". It's still the ultimate punishment.

Corporal punishment has its place.

While it wont bring the young guy back, it will certainly disuade others from doing the same thing if thats their penance.

If he's mentally ill, it won't do s**t to prevent crime like that. Additionally, torturing someone to dissuade others from committing crime is only going to create a general outcry from the populace. You'll end up making a martyr out of the criminal and completely screw up the "point" of torturing him.

What is with this obsession of torture?

More like 'an eye for a testicle, part of your leg, a few fingers, and the nails ripped from the other hand and any remaining toes and then dipped in vinegar, with a high salt content. And maybe some teeth too'
For something like this, I dont believe in 'an eye for an eye'.

More like 'an eye for a testicle, part of your leg, a few fingers, and the nails ripped from the other hand and any remaining toes and then dipped in vinegar, with a high salt content. And maybe some teeth too'
