well.. i went to fry's today and did some bad impulse shopping. well, not bad as in the parts, but because i could've saved money buying it online.

today i bought a q6600 quad core cpu, 4gb (2x2gb) corsair 6400 ram, 160gb sata hdd for 50 bucks and a gigabyte mobo. i decided to keep my old case and dvd/rw drive. pretty much all i need now is a video card, so far my total has come up to $470.00. After my video card purcahse, I am estimating everything to be about 650.00 at most.

k so i think i will be getting the 9800gtx+ and the e7200 ( i heard it can be oc'd to be as fast as an e8400. too bad p4 mobos are pricier though. anything else i should double check on such as ram and such? it seems that this rig is slightly over my budget, but that's okay

Might as well go for 4GB now. DDR2 is nutters cheap.

A Rosewill PSU?

HDD's are pretty cheap now too. You'd probably fill 80GB in a snap.

i did a bit more research... any good cheap p45 mobos that anyone knows of that would come with a case? i totalled everything together with a 9800gtx+ and e7200 processor, my total went up from $612 to $608 + a case which would equal about 650 or so

A better question is do you have a specific budget in mind?

First of all let me tell you that the 8800GTS 640MB is an outdated card and I really can not recommend it at all. the 8800GT 512MB is faster and can be bought for $149. Otherwise I'd step up to the HD4850 or 9800GTX+ for about $190 to $200.

AMD does offer many good CPUs at very cheap prices, but I'd still go with a Core 2 Duo E7200 instead if I was the one building the system. I'd also get a solid entry level P45 motherboard.

In this day and age I would say 80GB is really way too small of a HDD for most people unless you really do not keep any music, pictures, videos, or games on your system. I'd say get a 250GB or 320GB at minimum. They are putting 500GB hard drives in budget systems these days.

I am not sure why you want a USB network card, virtually all motherboards have built in Ethernet jacks these days. If it's wireless your after get a PCI or PCI-e x1 card that has Wireless G.

It's been about 5 years, but I think it is now time to upgrade my gaming rig. I came here before I built my current rig and had my choices for hardware critiqued and it has kept up with a ton of games, even COD4. It now seems that its life has come to an end because Hellgate London runs at low fps and isn't as crisp as I would like it to be. So for my choice for an economical right I have:

Processor: AMD athlon 64 dual core 6000+ windsor core
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103773

MB: ASUS M2N-E AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 Ultra MCP ATX AMD Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131022

Memory: OCZ Reaper HPC Edition 2GB PC2 6400 (planning on bumping it up to 4gb+ in the future)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227231

Graphics card: EVGA 640-P2-N829-AR GeForce 8800GTS SSC 640MB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130317

Case: rosewill atx case (good cheap case I heard, but not too durable. doesn't matter to me since I won't be travelling around with it)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147062

PSU: Rosewill 500wPSU (do u guys think this will power the whole rig?)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182016

CD/DVD drive: cd+dvd r/rw
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136144

Hard Disk: Seagate 80gb HDD 7200rpm 8mb cache
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148231

finally...

NIC: Linksys USB network adapter
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124122

Can you guy please also help me to make sure everything is compatible? I am a little rusty on computer parts at the moment since it has been about 5 years since I last visited this site :p. Thank you so much guys! Also, if there are better/cheaper alternatives that are reliable, please let me know!
